We had planned to go to another restaurant in Cheung Chau but they'd decided to take the day off. Instead, we happily stumbled across Eggenberg.
From the second we walked through the door, service was attentive and friendly, they went above and beyond what I've come to expect in HK. The decor is lovely, quaint and simple. Everything was really clean and well kept, from the bathrooms to the glimpse I got of the kitchen.
We had brought a nice bottle of vino with us, and were very pleasantly surprised with the $50 corcage fee! A fraction of what we are used to paying. They decanted it for us, and were attentive with top ups.
We settled on a snow pea and mozarella salad to start. The snow peas had been browned off, which added a nice warmth, and there were generous lashings of the soft mozarella. The dressing was light and zesty, not overwhelming at all.
For mains we went with the spiral bratwurst sausage and the pork knuckle to share between two of us. The sausage was delicious, really nicely seasoned, very tender and juicy with a fantastic not overly processed texture. It was such a generous serving too. The pork knuckle was melt in your mouth tender, falling easily away from the bone. Again, a very generous size.
I felt there could have been more saurkraut on the side, but I am addicted to the stuff, and possibly and alternative option such as mash or salad for those who aren't a fan (like my dining companion), but they were happy to replenish when I requested extra.
We were so stuffed that we didn't get around to trying any desserts, will save that for our next visit.
We never felt rushed, no one hurried us up even though we sat for a good half hour or so after we'd finished eating. We felt very welcome, and the environment was really great. I'd not hesitate to recommend, such a fantastic addition to Cheung Chau.
Dinner came to $470, very reasonable for such high quality food and service. We'll definitely be back.
