We had a very pleasant dining experience at Shiba at Kennedy Town. Surprisingly, we were the only guests during our visit (7-8pm). We started with salted squid, which is amazing! scallops - 108HKD/scallop. completely overcooked. also cut the scallop into 3. not sure why....maybe so he cut overcook 3 pieces instead of 1 piece.
chicken kidney - (daily special) - also so overcooked; the kidney was dry and crumbled in my mouth because it was so overcooked. for a benchmark kidney, try Yardbird's - juicy, soft, full of flavor
okra - so overcooked they were black and wrinkly

also the chef touches the raw/cooking meat then touches the rice then touches the raw/cooking meat and then the rice. ......

we spent HKD 400 for 2 people; we weren't full and decided not to order more. their items are similarly priced to yardbird; might as well go to yardbird instead! or if full, insen, or even Nantei!

had high hopes for a place like this in Kennedy Town!

Japanese skewers >> Ok. Homey and honest tasting, right amount of fire and not as salty as other skewer restaurants. Meat skewers were less exciting because Shiba used less condiments. We had beef tongue, chicken soft bones and skin, zisu minced chicken patty.

Vegetable skewers on the other hand stood out by sticking to the original sweetness of the ingredients. The bite size sweet potatoes - each potato was around 2 inches and caramelized under the fire. Crispy on the skin and steamy soft on the inside. Other choices such as ginkgo, tofu, green peppers and mushrooms were decent.

Most ingredients were imported from Japan hence the more premium prices. I would say drinks were the focus and food was to complement.
Other Info. : Best to make table reservation in advance. This place is tiny, subtle and authentic. It feels like walking into a Japanese TV drama set.
