continue reading

If you're looking to get your carb on on a budget then Utsav is your place for lunch. I've been to many a different curry houses in Wan Chai and both Jojo and Himalaya are excellent for their lunch buffet - but it's way too much. Sometimes you only need one plate but you end up eating 2 or 3 because you've paid a decent amount for the buffet. This is where Utsav comes into place. Yes it's not a fancy establishment like Jojos but the flavour is in the curry. Lunch sets start from HK55 to HK70. So for the standard lunch sets you get different curry options - veg, fish, chicken, beef and lamb and there is also tandoori chicken and lamb biryani to choose from as well. The standard sets includes , soup of the day, rice or naan, papadum, a drink (soft drink, ice lemon tea, coffee). Lassi costs an extra HK15. Today we all went for a Thali set. The soup of the day was a mushroom soup but with a pepper broth base. It was super tasty as soup of the days goes, it had a nice pepper kick to it. The Thali set, for HK70, is the the full works with the rice, naan and papadum. If you want to switch out the rice for more naan then by all means do request. It comes with mixed curry vegetables, a dal (lentil curry) and a meat curry of your choice (lamb, chicken, fish and beef). Each curry is full of flavour that you don't necessarily miss the fact the rice is just plain rice and not pulao and the naan being plain and not your favourite garlic naan or lacchi paratha... I would give this a place a 5 star for taste if an option for lacchi paratha was available, the rice was basmati pulao and if they serve you automatically with mint sauce and raita. However, it still gets a 4 verging on 4.5 for taste for lunch as the curries are super tasty and has a nice mild spice kick that lingers. Too many Indian curry houses have toned down the spice but Utsav manages to get flavour and some spice that is acceptable to the general public. In response to others who have mentioned the place being empty I would say on this normal Wednesday lunch the place was 90% full comprising of foreigners and over half being local Hong Kongers which is great. Over the last 10 years I have seen more and more locals happily eating curry for lunch or dinner - they are definitely being more creative with their tastebuds and exploring beyond the Hong Kong staples of beef brisket curry, Japanese curry and Thai curry.  I highly recommend anyone to give it a try for lunch for their Thali but ensure you have an empty stomach and a relatively easy afternoon....  continue reading

Great service, great flavours. I’m convinced they use more spices and ingredients than other restaurants - the difference in flavour is huge! Big portions (warning!). You won’t be disappointed. Always a fantastic meal. I brought my curry buddies - all grudgingly agreed it’s the best in HK! Place to go for a casual meal, not trying to be something it’s not. Kingfisher beer a plus. continue reading

This is a good, cheap Indian restaurant that’s hidden on the 2nd floor of Amoy street. I’ve had both lunch & dinner here and each time I went, the place was almost empty. It’s a shame cause the food is really good, particularly the curry, vegetable, chicken tikka and tandoori dishes. The price point is cheaper than Himalaya (another favorite spot of mine) and food just as good, if not better. The service is also good, and ironically there’s no service charge. I always leave a tip above 10% to places like this just to make a point. It’s a good place to bring friends. They have booth seats for 4 or more. The restaurant is reasonably clean too. continue reading
