So looking for a new steak restaurant now that our favourite Wooloomooloo in LKF shut. Found W28 using open rice, and walked in on a Friday night 8pm and they were rather quiet. The best way to describe the restaurant, it's pretty much in the same vein as Japanese steak restaurants where the senior citizens eat. Very peaceful, quiet, reserved.. but a little bit staid. To those who have lived in Japan, you should get that image immediately... not that that is a bad thing. The menu works by picking
The menu works by picking your main course, and then the soup, starter & dessert are included in the price.
We were seated in a private booth, very nice and cosy. Could easily seat 4, so very comfortable for the 2 of us.
The head chef/owner of the restaurant nicely talked us through the specials and answered our questions.
The bread arrived, and this was one of the poor marks. You get 2 types of bread in the basket, slices of baguette and a type of herb roll with butter & olive oil. Unfortunately the bread tasted quite stale... Definitely wasn't the quality I'd expect from an 'expensive' restaurant. When we did eat the bread, they did kindly offer more.
Onto the soups & starters. These were very nice. Good hearty portions, tasted very rich too.
The steaks were good not amazing or a must go back and eat that again. However must mention that the King Prawn was very good and definitely a highlight. Each main has a roast potato, 2 pieces of turnip, and a stuffed tomato with peas. These were just ok, seemed like they'd been prepared a while earlier and had been sitting around.
Desserts - another ok. We were full by now and if it wasn't already included in the price, we wouldn't have ordered them. The crepes - apparently a signature dish - wasn't that good. Again, seemed like it had been prepared over an hour ago and just had the orange sauce poured on. Didn't feel like it was fresh off the pan. Chocolate truffle cake with vanilla ice cream, again so so. Apparently the creme brûlée was another signature dish, but they only told us that after they served our desserts.
Overall, the service was very good, staff polite and friendly. Always willing to chat with customers.
The place is very quiet, a good venue to chat merrily away without needing to raise your voice. Think there were at least 3 b'day dinners that evening, and it does seem appropriate for a quiet family meal out.
But with the stiff steak house competition already out there, I'll probably try all of those first before coming back.
