I am quite a big fan of afternoon tea but I hadn't tried the whole afternoon tea set at Island ShangriLa although I was quite a frequent visitor to Island Gourmet. Finally decided to try one day. So lucky to get a table around 3p.m. on a week day. At a price of $558+10% for 2 persons, you get 5 types of sweets each, 5 types of savoury each, 1 plain and 1 Japanese green tea scone each, and 1 coffee/tea each. Must admit that the price was not cheap at all. We decided to choose our favourite iced ch

We decided to choose our favourite iced chocolates with skimmed milk for our drink. The drinks were served first. They were not too sweet but a bit too diluted with the ices.

The afternoon tea set rack wasn't particularly pretty compared with that at many other hotels to be honest.

Savoury items were one of the best I had ever had. Blue crab meat with rose jelly malt bread (bottom left) looked so pretty with the transparent jelly. It was so refreshing despite the not so outstanding crab meat. Foie gras terrine with honey brioche (top left) had pretty delicious foie gras which was super smooth. Wild salmon with black tea spinach bread had fresh salmon but I couldn't really find spinach. Lobster tartare with black tea mini bun had the soft bun which I really liked. The lobster tartare was really tasty although I couldn't really find lobster which seemed to have been masked by the dressing. French Brie cheese with Earl Grey caramelised walnut had quite a thick slice of cheese which was so good despite the not-so-strong walnut. Overall pretty elaborately prepared and delicious.

Sweets were generally pretty good, although I think they could have been even better! Mint chocolate with Tie Guan Yin ganache tart (in the middle) was the chocolate ball. It had a thin crust with loads of ganache inside. Couldn't really find mint or tie guan yin flavours though. Matcha green tea chocolate Opera next to them was the cake of the month. It was so appealing to me but ended up not too special with a mix of green tea + chocolate. It was tasty though. Earl Grey Macaron was pretty good. It was of the perfect texture, fresh enough yet not overly sweet. Jasmine tea chocolate berries was the red one. It was great because it was refreshing enough with berries flavour. Couldn't really find Jasmine though. Apricot Ceylon tea infused orange mousse was pretty good too because it was so refreshing! Couldn't find Ceylon tea much but it was so refreshing with the apricot + orange flavours. The crispy cookie base was an added bonus point. I found the fruity ones generally better. I think the chocolate ones could have been better but overall they were still good.

So happy to see Japanese green tea scones! It was my first time to eat green tea scones. We asked for re-heating to make them even hotter when served. The plain one was quite good with crunchy crust and it was not easy to break into very small pieces. It went great with the clotted cream. The green tea one was even better which was so rich in green tea. Could well just eat it without clotted cream but I tried eating some with rose apricot jam which made it even better by adding some sweet + sour flavour! Great scones. I honestly think they were one of the best in HK and their clotted cream was also one of the best in town!
Overall, I must say that the quality of the food was quite good. The sweet items were comparable with those at Four Seasons/MO or even Le Salon De The de Joel Robuchon. The savoury items were even better (a lot better than just those average sandwiches offered at MO and even those at Peninsula) and quite special and elaborate as those offered at say Le Salon De The de Joel Robuchon! Regarding scones, the Japanese green tea scone was very outstanding (way better than those at Le Salon De The de Joel Robuchon and especially Tiffin (which were the worst I had ever had)) and the clotted cream was one of the best.
Service was also top notch as I had always been saying which made you feel warm and welcomed. Such service was really so hard to find elsewhere. The environment was not top notch, but still beautifully decorated which made you feel very comfortable especially the sofa seating.
Would definitely recommend this place to you. Somehow it was really a struggle because recommending good stuff to others may make this place more crowded than before.
