I was in Causeway Bay again for dinner with some friends on a Saturday night and we had no idea where to eat. After calling a few places with no tables until at least 9pm, we decided to head over to The Goldmark (黃金廣場) to look for food as the restaurants there are usually less busy. After a quick search on Openrice we decided to go to The Mon, which had fairly good ratings.Since we arrived early we didn’t have to wait for a table, although they mentioned we’d have to finish within an hour and a
Since we arrived early we didn’t have to wait for a table, although they mentioned we’d have to finish within an hour and a half. The restaurant is a bit dark so I guess it’s more like an Izakaya type of place. To start we ordered their Regular Tamakoyaki which is their signature dish: My friends insisted that I take a picture of the logo grilled onto the egg XD -That being said, this dish was disappointing considering that this is their ‘signature’ dish.
-There was no egg taste and it was really sweet
-The texture was really weird, sort of like bean curd skin. It was also very wet and not the fluffy texture you’d expect for a tamagoyaki
Cold Soba Noodles with Fish Curry Sauce -The concept sounded interesting and I thought it would be like tsukemen. But it turns out that the sauce was too watery to serve as a dipping sauce
-The curry was alright, with a strong coconut taste and quite spicy.
-I didn’t like how the curry was served lukewarm. The soba noodles were cold and cooled down the sauce even more – I don’t think curry is meant to be eaten cold.
Since this place was famous for skewers, my friends ordered an ox tongue and a chicken cheese skewer -The ox tongue was way too tough and chewy
-The texture of the chicken was alright, but I didn’t like the cheese sauce.
We also ordered a Kimchi Bibimbap to fill ourselves up - -Unfortunately the waitress mixed up the rice for us so we didn’t have time to cook up the crust.
-The toppings were alright though – nicely marinated beef and enough sauce to mix with the rice. It tasted a bit like generic teriyaki sauce but this is a Japanese restaurant so no complaints.
Last we ordered a Mentaiko Cheese Squid - -The squid was actually quite nicely grilled. Tender, but could be a little bit warmer when they served it
-The cheese sauce on top wasn’t bland and quite cheesy, but I didn’t taste any mentaiko at all :s
Our bill came up to be around $370 for the three of us and the portion was enough for a dinner. I’m not so sure that I would come back though.
