This is a large, bustling, open kitchen on the 1/f of 43 Dundas St, Mongkok. I loved it. Again I was the only westerner there although that didn't phase them. They have menus in English although not much spoken English. The service was a mixture of aloof, friendly and downright surly. Never mind because I was enjoying the vibe. Never mind because I was enjoying the vibe. This restaurant is a much bigger commercial step in comparison to 'Zheng Zong Yunnan, Guizhou & Sichuan Original' in Sheung Wan. The kitchen is completely open and set up behind a glass wall where 4 women in hairnets industriously turn out the delicious dishes.
Not all the dishes were consistently wow at first bite but overall the impression was YUM! Spicy and Sour Shredded potato ($20) needed some dark vinegar to get it going and the 2 chilli level on this was considerably hotter than the 2 chilli level on the Spicy and Sour Cassava Noodle with Minced Pork ($20) which was completely manageable. The Spicy & Sour Cassava Noodle with Minced Port was the star for me!! The base broth was wonderful. Full of umami and herb and sour and chilli notes all at once. Great with the roasted peanuts and the pickled vegetables too. The Cassava noodles were a new thing for me. They were very chewy which is probably exactly how they should be. However I found them difficult to bite through.
As a respite / contrast I also ordered Deep Fried Sichuan Pork dumplings which came with a sweet chill dipping sauce. These were so so. I couldn't really taste the port inside. They might as well have been Chinese donuts. But as I said, I ordered them as a contrast to all the flavour hits I was getting.
I will definately be back with friends. What a bargain. $68 for 3 dishes which I couldn't finish. Also, they are BYO which suits me so I went back down to the Circle K and bought 2 large Tsing Tao for $21. Gee, all that for AUD12.
