As an American, I’m constantly on the prowl for delicious Mexican food. The spate of pop-ups that are turning into chains throughout HK (Little Burro, Cali-Mex, Mr. Taco Truck) all generally fall under the concept of the ‘taqueria’, prevalent throughout Mexico and Southern California. It seems the Mexican food trend will continue for a while in HK, and that’s a good thing!Andy’s Kitchen has received some decent buzz from magazines like Time Out, which is what prompted me to drag Hangrywifey out
Andy’s Kitchen has received some decent buzz from magazines like Time Out, which is what prompted me to drag Hangrywifey out to yet another ‘Mexican’ venue. The results are mixed, but with definite room to grow.
Firstly, the venue is small, the interior designed to look like that of a small garage. Atmosphere can be manipulated, so it wasn’t really a factor in my approach to dining at this restaurant. The focus was the food. We were in a rush, so we settled on one appetiser and one main.
Jalapeños Rellenos, 88HKD. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED IT. Discussion with Andy himself clarified that Andy’s Kitchen is striving to bring a truly authentic Mexican flavour to contrast itself against the Tex-Mex venues throughout HK. This dish, bar none, is perhaps the most authentic Mexican flavour I’ve had in HK so far. Most of the ingredients are imported from Mexico, which meant that the jalapeños were fantastically spicy. Andy explained there is a second option for the Rellenos (which included a genetically-modified jalapeño stuffed with cheese and breaded. He allowed us to taste the difference. While the modified jalapeño is the stuff fatty Americans’ dreams are made of, the Mexican jalapeño was far superior. My only complaint was the bacon wrapping felt a bit fatty, but the pairing of jalapeño, sour cream (from Mexico) and bacon (a kind of back bacon) was really delicious. Warning: spiciness level (high) - not for the faint of heart. Suggestion: add one more jalapeño to the dish to increase value for money.

Andy himself was open to feedback concerning the food, and he also advised that an updated menu is coming soon. With the addition of truly authentic and savoury Mexican dishes that go against the grain of simple, typical Mexican fare, Andy’s Garage could end up being a winner in the Mexican restaurant game of HK. A few tweaks here and there could lead to a really delicious menu. Time will tell, but with dishes like Jalapeños Rellenos on the menu, it’s a decent start.
