Located in the Sai Wan Ho district of Hong Kong in what is branded Soho East, Como is not easy to find - one has to walk past the main row of restaurants and pass the back side of a residential block before turning the corner - and most people would have stopped when the restaurant row ended.
Difficult to find as it might be, it certainly is worth the journey. The restaurant is big - divided into two sides with a bar+casual tables on one side and full dining on the other. Decoration was tasteful with French Windows opening the restaurant to the outside so it felt quite airy. As the name suggested - a personal guess is that it's taken from Lake Como - Como served Italian food, and they were good at it. The menu was standard Italian, divided into antipasti, salad, entree, secondi, and desserts. Items on offer were varied and choices were good. Initially we were not sure about the portion size so we ordered sautéed mixed mushrooms, and a pasta with grilled king prawn, as well as freshly shucked oysters (not quite Italian, but delightful nonetheless). The oysters (I forgot the variety) were fresh and very tasty and at $55 a piece it was of good value. The sautéed mushrooms were done in butter with a hint of garlic which was as good as it got. The pasta was al-dente perfect and the king prawn grilled to perfection. The only complaint was that it was two halves of one king prawn - I am quite sure my fellow diners would find it most acceptable if two king prawns were included in the pasta, at a higher price of course. A roasted game hen was then ordered. It was succulent and tender with a crispy outside. The sauce complimented the chicken very nicely but could do with more.
One thing I noticed, which raised very much the score I gave this restaurant, was that all three cooked dishes were served very hot - a factor very often overlooked or omitted in restaurants in HK - indicating a good management team who would ensure timely serving of the courses by the table staff. Nothing could be more disappointing than good food served cold. Dessert was Tiramisu. Well made, but no surprises.
The bill for two sharing five courses without wine came to just over US$100. Good value.
Overall this is a delightful little gem in the Eastern part of Hong Kong and certainly worth the tour getting there. But make sure you have their telephone number on you because most probably you would need to call them for directions - just as i did.
