Three dim sum posts in a row! (You can tell I LOVE dim sum)

A friend and I decided to have a quick afternoon dim sum meal @ Jade Garden (翠园) on a Wednesday afternoon. We chose it mainly because it is conveniently located in the arcade. While other dim sum places like 美心 and 稻香 seemed to be still very crowded during afternoon, 翠园 was relatively quiet with only half of the tables full. We were sent straight to a large table and we placed our orders immediately.

First came was a special-priced item 翠玉芝心炸云吞 ($9.8 afternoon). This was a twist of the normal shrimp 炸云吞 by replacing the shrimp filling with cheese and asparagus. It sounded interesting on paper, but was poor in execution. There were too little cheese and asparagus that you felt like you were biting into a hollow fried wonton skin. The cheese did nothing to enhance the flavor as the quantity was too small and it wasn’t melting. Someone might say that why I am complaining when it was only $9.8. My principle is that if it is delicious, I will pay $98 for it. If it is like the quality that I had, I wouldn’t order it even if it was free.

Another fried item, the salt-grilled “Bombay-duck” fish (椒盐九肚鱼), didn’t turn out better. Again, the visual appearance, with large amount of 椒盐 (fried garlic) on top of a whole bowl of fried fish fillets, totally deceived us to believe that this would be a tasty dish. Strangely enough, the fried garlic had no flavor (odd right?) but the fish was extremely salty even without the fried garlic. The coating was too thick and the fish wasn’t silky at all. We didn’t finish the dish in the end.
***I remember when I was small I had this exceptional 椒盐九肚鱼 @ 金岛潮州酒楼 (尖沙咀) and the fried fish was smooth and silky like tofu inside with an ultra thin and crispy coating outside. That was when 金岛 was really famous and great in the old dates and was serving all the big bosses. I heard that it went downhill nowadays. But that’s a separate topic.

Fortunately not everything was a disaster as the steamed items turned out to be quite good. 素粉果 did its duties with a thin semi-translucent skin and fresh vegetarian filling to revitalize our tastebuds. I could find strips of real turnips when biting into the steamed turnip cakes 瑶柱蒸萝卜榚, despite lacking the juicy sweetness overall. At least you didn’t feel like you were eating a “flour” cake. 流沙饱 was a pleasant surprise, as it indeed gave a 流沙 filling which created some excitement among the two chatty girls. You need to eat this hot and quick though, or else the level of 流沙 diminishes with time.

Service was adequate and quite prompt. That was probably because it wasn’t exactly crowded and most diners were just relaxing in the relatively modern décor. I think the price was reasonable during the afternoon tea hours, but if it was regular price during lunch, it would have been as expensive as 富声 which was clearly superior in quality. I will suggest that you visit this place only if you are nearby and want a convenient location for dim sum without suffering from the noisy crowds at 美心 & 稻香.
