Got something to do in Kwun Tong and decided to grab lunch with a few buddies at economical Ugly Ducklings. It was super full with long lines waiting for takeaways over lunch on a week day. They had comfortable cart seats for customers dining in separated by partitions.Their lunch set menu was very economical as always with 14 choices of sets including instant noodles, salad, different kinds of meat with fries, rice, spaghetti or mashed potato etc. You could add $5 for all sets to get a soup or
Their lunch set menu was very economical as always with 14 choices of sets including instant noodles, salad, different kinds of meat with fries, rice, spaghetti or mashed potato etc. You could add $5 for all sets to get a soup or salad and a hot coffee or tea. You could further top up by $3 for iced coffee or tea. There was no service charge. The most expensive set was $89 while the cheapest one was just $50.
We were in a group of 4 and ordered 4 different lunch sets.

Soup and Salad (included in lunch set)
Cauliflower Cream Soup was the soup of the day. It was served very hot, great for the cold weather. Although it did not look so concentrated, it was actually thicker than we thought with mashed cauliflower. It was not overly salty and was a bit creamy which was not bad as a set lunch soup.
Salad of the day had fresh salad greens with some cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices, sweet corn and onion slices in a light salad dressing. It was quite a healthy salad bowl.
Chef Salad (Poached egg, Cheese, Roast beef, Ham) 厨师沙律 (烚蛋，芝士，烧牛肉，火腿) $50
It was the only salad on their set lunch menu. One of my lunch buddies was on diet so picked this. The salad greens, cherry tomatoes, sweet corn, onion slices, cucumber slice were all very fresh in a light salad dressing. It was basically same as the top up salad for the set. There was a slice of roast beef cut into 5 slices which was salty to eat with the salad. There was also a healthy poached egg and some cheese and ham slices. It was a healthy and light lunch option.
Pumpkin and Vegetables Risotto with Chicken Breast 南瓜汁什菜烩意大利饭配鸡胸 $70
It was another set we ordered. It was a vegetarian dish with an option to add 5 slices of chicken breasts at just $18. The pumpkin sauce made the risotto all yellow and was sufficient to make the risotto moist and a little bit sweet. The risotto was mixed with quite a lot of broccolis and carrots. The 5 chicken breasts had been grilled and were very lean.

It was another of the sets we ordered. Portion of the BBQ pork ribs was giant with 4 bones and quite a lot of meat. The pork ribs were not those really tender type but were not hard to chew. The amount of BBQ sauce was sufficient and tasted very good. It even made the fries more tasty so that I did not need to eat with ketchup. The fries had crunchy crust and starchy interior. Accompanying the dish there were quite a lot of healthy boiled cabbages, carrot sticks and mushrooms. At such a price, it was really great value for money.

I had never had much expectation of mixed grilled meat but this dish had totally changed my impression. There were three big pieces of steak, especially for the beef steak and pork chop. The beef steak was so thick and well grilled as you could tell from the picture that it was medium rare.

It was quite rich in beef flavour and was reasonably tender. There was some tendon and I found them edible just after some chewing. The pork chop was so thick and had a clear grill mark. The chicken steak was very tender and juicy having been well grilled. All three steaks were of really high quality given the price. I personally liked this dish even more than the bbq pork dish. We went for black pepper sauce rather than mushroom sauce or garlic sauce and it was very good as it was not overly salty or spicy yet good to add flavour to the sides. Likewise, the accompanying fries and boiled veggies were nice.
Hot lemon water (included in lunch set)
A hot coffee or tea was included in the set. I had hot lemon water which had 2 slices of lemon.
With such quality and portion of food, reasonably comfortable seats and such prices with no service charge, the lunch sets were really of great value for money. In short, I found their meat dishes especially their mixed grilled meat dish and BBQ pork particularly great value for money.
