One night priot to watching the all important July 2009 Basketball Finals between 南华 vs 永伦 (a great game by the way!) at the Southorn Stadium, 2 groups of friends were in search of a venue for a quick dinner. All these guys are so very 嘴刁 and 麻烦 haha but we were short on time so took a gamble with this new shop. but we were short on time so took a gamble with this new shop. The original 喜喜's were all quite run down and too inconsistent to be real threats to places like 再兴 or 龙门, this I know from past experience years ago. Lately however, they've opened at least yet another 2 new shops in the area, this one and one closer to the Wanchai bar area. They'rv virtually cornered the competition!

叉烧 + 烧肉饭 Combo:

ON that particular early July night, the Char Siu was truly very excellent and in fact, it was easily the best Char Siu I've had recently and worth a TOP '5'. Friends were still raving about it 1 day and then weeks after repetitively. It was sophisticated in marinations, grilled to perfection and slightly charry, interlaced with melty fat and topped with a malty glaze - it beats 再兴's '卤水味' 叉烧 hands down. The 烧肉 was only average in comparison, about a '3' at most as the meat was slightly tough and the skin hard despite the 'sesame skin' look.

Fast forwards just one week later and then another visit in August recently, the quality was so obviously not as good as that once-off occasion. It was less tender, less charry, less tasteful, more gristles - definitely below 再兴's levels. I asked the staff why the inconsistency and they said all BBQ items are made on the premise by the same person and not dependent on other outlets, so they couldn't explain it either. On subsequent occasions, the experiences deserve around mid '3'.

AVERAGED OVER 3 OCCASIONS - a Mid '3' to High '5'. Around a High '3' to Low '4'.

Its actually easy to predict by standing from the display shelf whether you'll get good Char Siu that night. They just have that 'correct' look on the surface, when they're just done completely right. I sincerely wish that they could 1 day, replicate the very satisfying experience we encountered on that July special occasion. But so far when peeping in through the BBQ Display Window, I haven't yet again re-encountered that particular 'look' I'm desperately searching for. One day..... I'll catch you...
