It used to be one of my favourite picks for dinner, as it stands out as a homemade style with hearty choice of quality ingredients with generous chunks of offer. Imagine you had oysters in congee with average size larger than a local five dollar coin and its juicy rib sticks at average of 4 to 5 centimeter thick, with more than avearage amount of relatively costly main ingredients in each portion of dish! These are good reasons for returning for a sensible price, though relatively higher than th
And so long since we went there last time, one of the reasons could be it required early reservation as it was like within 200 sq. feet, furnished with TV sets hanging on the wall, and one single family or group of friends of 6, it could occupy nearly half of the space of the restaurant, other tables would remain 3 for couples, one table that could accomodate 4 in a comfy setting, and 5 to 6 in maximum. That speaks how challenging to wait till one group go and a table vacant. At weekends, many people drive far away to dine there and gather with their friends and families for a meal, making it more competitive to expect a table there. (See below for a quarter of its floor) And it happened it rained quite a lot these weeks and we managed to drop by earlier at around 12noon, meaning no need to line up for a table. So, we long recognized its lunch set would be a bargain, and whether you feel the same or not, you could refer the lunch menu below: We ordered L1 below, Unlike the dinner session, the pot was filled only half full, which would be just right for sharing between two. A full pot could fill 4 persons.
The staff members were particularly smart and friendly, they would ask if you need any pepper powder to go with the congee, and if you would prefer to add hints of spring oinon on top, before they served the dish. If the customers are frequent-diners, they would remember their taste and pick and ask if you would prefer the same in advance. It makes you feel like dining in a relative's home as they might spend some time chatting with you if they are not too occupied. Indeed, they themsleves dine there too, sometimes with the chef sitting next to you, when they can squeeze time for their meal break.
Speaking of the congee, we had yellow eel last time. The yellow eel chunks were like 4cm long and about 1.5cm think on average, juicy and fresh, filling up about one third of the volume of the congee. This time, however, I was disappointed about its loss of natural taste with its "overdose" of chicken soup. I couldn't believe my impression of it could be ruined by such a "cheating" practice! It really doesn't have to. In the past, we might come across some unlucky days when the chef was on leave or if somebody in charge was not in shape, with the dishes turned out to be immersed with excessive oil and salt. Other would be just perfectly alright, and the only thing less satisfactory was the cramped setting with its popularity. Yellow eel congee ($50, extra $20 for an addition of ingredients from the choice of chicken, oyster, fish slices to Chinese edible frog)
From 9 options of dishes with rice and soup of the day, number 8, steamed fish with soy bean sauce. The soup of the day was boiled winter melon and pork. It was not bad, and the soup is known as a traditional treat against irregularity of the body as a result of humid and hot summer days. Yet again, I could tell flavour enhancer was added to the soup, as usually it would not taste as sweet, not even with the dates.
Besides, my thirst for hours after tasting the soup and the congee could be affirmative for its use of lots of MSG. For the choice of fishes, there were about three. Sliced catfish was chosen, for its smoothness went well with streaming. At a dish size of about 18cm in diameter, the cutfish was sliced in average length of 8cm. That was quite a spoiling experience!
Dishes for recommendation in this restaurant, if without its addition of excessive MSG, include sweet and sour ribs, black vingear flavoured ribs, assorted vegetables with vercillimi, etc. Again, if you're interested in trying it, make sure you call to reserve a seat in advance, better a day ago. Parking near the area could be a headache, yet to locate a space nearby along A Kung Ngam Road would be easier, though it would take about 5 min walk across the road before you reach this restaurant again.
