The first time boyfriend and I came across Ita Meshi, we had just had dinner next door and found this little restaurant with a logo consisting of Fuji Mountain and a scooter. So, cute I thought and as we looked at the menu, we made a point to give it a try some time as items seemed very interesting. Thus on this warm evening, we weren't sure what to eat until I remembered we wanted to try this place. The outside seems very cute but inside is totally different. Very chic and hip with high bar tabl

The outside seems very cute but inside is totally different. Very chic and hip with high bar table like seating.

The menu is in English and Chinese. Everything is on one page which I do love. Concise and to the point. Not pages and pages of items that you start to wonder if the chef has any focus at all. This place doesn't do that and it shows they have purpose. Items are modernized Japanese Western dishes.

They also have non-alcholic and alcoholic drinks along with a decent sake and wine list.

Boyfriend ordered a cocktail and chose Matcharita ($120). It came in a pretty glass with a dried orange as a garnish. This was a tequila with orange liqueur, fresh lime juice, agave and matcha. This was strong enough for boyfriend but you could still taste the matcha as it was perfectly balanced with the sweet citrus undertones.

I had a mocktail and chose Green Tea  Strawberry ($78). Green tea, strawberry puree, lime juice and egg white. The egg white was the foam on top. They even had strawberries as the garnish. I've had a lot of mocktails and they've always been just lazily slapped together sugar syrup mixed with Sprite/7-up. But here it wasn't! This was an actual crafted drink. It wasn't too sweet and had a nice bit of sourness that matched well with the green tea. It was like having a drinkable green tea strawberry parfait.

We decided to just have a few starters, main and dessert to share so we could try out what this place was all about.

The first starter was the Beef Tartare with Uni, Lumpfish Roe ($148). It came with some crisp thinly toasted slices of bread. There was some fresh onions and shichimi powder on the side for seasoning which you do need to complete this. The beef was finely diced but what was different was the addition of creamy uni and roe on top to give it that popping bite. All this seemed odd but it worked as it made the beef more creamier and luxurious.

The other appetizer was the Tuna Tataki ($128). There were six pieces of fresh tuna that was heavily seasoned. There was a spicy soysauce in the middle to give it a real kick.

The last appetizer was the Sake Baked Oysters with Baby Octopus ($110 for 3 pieces). You definitely get a suprise here as there is a lot of wasabi added. The oysters were fresh and the little octopus were perfectly cooked. It was almost like a take on the popular izakaya dish tako wasabi or wasabi octopus. Very creative.

For the main we shared a Soft Shell Crab Organic Pasta ($178). Just to say, portion is quite good and we were able to share this and still felt full. The crab was crisp and not dripping in oil like some places I've had this. The pasta was al dente. And the sauce! The tomato sauce was rich. But most interesting of all? They added flying fish roe so you get a bit of crunch while slurping away at your pasta. This was ingenious and I loved it.

We ended with dessert of Matchamisu ($68). We chose this because we wanted something different and this seemed like the place to be different. We were not disappointed.  The layers of marscapone with cake and matcha all blended together well. It was creamy and lush but yet not too filling. Definitely couldn't get enough.

Definitely one of the best dining experiences I've had this year so far. The food was not only delicious but creative. The drinks were amazing and well thought out. And service was excellent despite only two people working the entire place with a nearly full house on a weekday night. Will definitely be back!
