A painting near our table.

I've been taking a Cantonese class in Wan Chai and using the opportunity to try some places I've always wanted to go. Before the winter break, we'd tried to go to FLM, but when we showed up they had no seats. This time I called about an hour before lunch and got us a table for 7 on a Saturday.

Dubbed "The Cafeteria for the Wealthy," I was certainly tickled to see one woman wearing her sunglasses indoors. I didn't see anybody I recognized, but then again, I don't know most Hong Kong celebrities.

I didn't do any of the ordering and the dim sum menu is not online in English, so I am going to be a little loose with my descriptions. This is siu yuk, roast pig, and it was quite delicious. Tender, crispy on the outside, and not too fatty.

I think the shells of these things are made from glutinous rice, and inside is pork and maybe mushrooms. Sometimes I find them a little too sticky, but these were nice.

Shrimp spring roll: crispy, shrimpy, and served with vinegar. Relatively simple, they came nice and hot, which can't be said for every dim sum place.

This vegetable I am not going to be able to name, it wasn't on the dim sum menu, and a Cantonese-speaking friend ordered it, and she didn't know the English name. "Chinese ____" where ____ is some random Western green, I'm sure. Apparently this is only available in the winter. It's nice and strongly flavored, tasted a lot like canned spinach-- which is not an insult, because I love canned spinach. Deal with it.

We had a pescatarian with us, and some people ravenous for the flesh of animals, so there was a balancing act. I suggested the vegetable cheong fan, and they were pretty good. Nobody I know likes rice rolls except me. I realize they're not sexy, but not all dim sum has to be XO'd and deep fried.

Here's the sticky rice in lotus leaf. These were smaller than you sometimes get-- which I think is a good thing-- with perhaps a higher proportion of rice to fillings. Not the greatest thing on the menu.

I love turnip cake and these turnip cake cubes stir fried in XO sauce were fantastic. There was some spicy sauce on the table and that amped up the flavor. This was my favorite thing, and I recommend it.

I think this is just cha siu, but I also think the menu had some more elaborate name for it. Again, I didn't order, so I can't really say. This was some fantastic pork, definitely my second favorite thing on the menu. It had just the right amount of sweet marinade, and the right combination of meat and fat, very tender, you should get this.

I usually don't like pork buns of any variety. I think they're too sweet typically, and I especially have never liked this particular variety with the fluffy bun. Often it's like eating sweetened styrofoam. Anyway, I actually liked these, so my compliments to the chef. The bread was rather soft and they were more judicious in the sweetening elements.

Again, I'm having a little bit of trouble being certain of what this is. I think it's taro pan-fried like a turnip cake. A little mushier than your standard turnip cake. I like that I got to try this, but it was only OK.

The pork ribs were really delicious. Not appetizing-looking, really, but very flavorful, I wish we'd gotten two.

Har gau: I'm still not enough of a dim sum expert to really discern that much difference in har gau from place to place. They're always a must-order, but I can't really say what makes any variety better.

We got three desserts. I was full by then and passed because I'm not really into sweet stuff. Everyone seemed to like them and they all got ate, so there you go.

I think the total was something like $260 a head, so not cheap by any measure. We did get a lot. I did think all the food was great. There was some elegance to the experience. Tables were spaced pretty far apart, and I liked the art (see above). Service could be a little gruff (we were waved off by a server on pig-duty), and we did have to wait about 10 min after our reservation time to be seated, but that's no biggie.

If you've got the dosh to drop, the food here is great, but you won't be missing out on too much if you go someplace cheaper.
