Recalling my past visit of Peking Garden in Admiralty branch was memorable superb experience, felt like to come back for rewarding myself after this week tough work. I was holding pretty high expectations.First come first, an sesame oil marinated appetiser was served. First come first, an sesame oil marinated appetiser was served. Remembering my past visit was served with a hint of spiced edamame bean curd cucumber cold dish, it was cucumber, tofu curd and peanuts in sesame oil. Personally found it pretty bland. There was only sesame oil taste, neither saltiness nor spiciness could be taste, but at least peanuts and cucumber were crunchy.
We ordered half a Barbecued peking duck,
Sauteed minced pork with pickled vegetables (served with 2 pieces of sesame pastry), Sautéed shredded pork with assorted vegetables and vermicelli & egg ( served with 6pcs pancakes), Steamed vegan meat & mushroom dumplings and
Vegan xiao long bao with mushroom. For dessert, we requested mashed red bean pancakes.
Sauteed minced pork with pickled vegetables (served with 2 pieces of sesame pastry) was first served. Without disappointment, the stir fry was delicious. Very savoury with the crunch from the pickled vegetables. Edamame added some silky earthiness. And it was not oily at all. Sadly, the sesame pastry wasn't toasted at all. It will be grateful to warm it up so that the toasted sesame from the pastry could add some nuttiness in the combination.
Moving on to the vegan xiao long bao with mushroom and steamed vegan meat & mushroom dumplings. Xiao long bao was flavouful on its own without the gingery vinegar. Unlike the traditional xiao long bao with oozing out hot soup, the umami soup from the mushroom xiao long bao had been leaked out before lifting up from the chopsticks. It had a stronger vegan meat flavour than mushroom taste. Wrappers were thin as it should be. Personally prefer the traditional one but worth to try if looking for fusion. The steamed vegan meat & mushroom dumplings were better. Soft thin wrapping with umami flavour. The vegan meat had less pungent taste with stronger mushroom flavour. However, it had to consume quick. Wrappers became hard and sticky once cooled.
Sautéed shredded pork with assorted vegetables and vermicelli & egg ( served with 6pcs pancakes)was quite let down. I remember it served with more greens and sprouts covering with fried egg in the past and this time, it came with more pork strips with smaller stir fry egg that unable to cover the vegetables base. Pancakes were easily broken down and wrapped. It was pretty messy while eating it. The whole dish was more on a meat base instead of balancing vermicelli, vegetables and meat. And thus, pretty oily.
Here it came to the most exciting part, peking duck. As expected, skin was crispy and meat was tender. Well marinated and tender. Wrappers were thin but again easily broke down. It was appreciated they gave generous amount of cucumber and chives that more than enough. Overall, it kept its quality.
Last but not least, the mashed red bean pancakes which was again sad while served. Maybe I have had more better looking ones. To me, it's a Chinese version of quesadillas...Stuffing red bean mashed between two tortillas while more in egg base. Not crunchy but chewy. It tasted very eggy. Good side is generous amount of red bean paste that oozed out.
Overall, it did not feel as enjoyable as my past visits. Not bad, just not what I was looking for.
