2. My friend's lamb shank was normal but the sidedish was very strange. They served steamed Chiese white cabbage halves. SUPER STRANGE. They used to have yam mash which was normal and yummy. Not anymore. I think they are trying to cut cost. BAD MOVE.

3. Their Pavlova was the WORST. It was as hard as LIMESTONE. and they tried to put lots of whipped cream to cover it. Also, we found at least 10 index-finger-nail size sugar crystals in that one slice of pavlova. TERRIBLE!!!!!
Their pavlova's used to be so soft and marshmallowy on the inside, chewy on the outside. So Disappointing.

Overall, it was a very bad experience. Totally out of my expectation. I was so disappointed. Oolaa used to be my favourite restaurant. NOT ANYMORE. I will never go again. It was a time, money and brain cells wasting dining experience.

Thinking about its location being isolated from the rest of Soho, Oolaa really should get its act together to improve its service. Otherwise I can see it being another failed restaurant in the Soho area within the year.

Part of the restaurant opens up right onto the sidewalk, so that's perfect for dog owners if you can get a table next to it.

In any case, Oolaa is a huge restaurant and it was full of people having lively conversations. It was a bit loud, but pleasant. We worried about getting a table without a reservation, but the host showed us a previously reserved table straight away. After that though, the waiting started: the numerous staff was constantly running around, but service was slow.

My gf ordered pumpkin & mascarpone ravioli to start. which was served to share even though we said we are not sharing. She was offered pepper from the impressively large pepper mill even there was salt and pepper on the table already. The time spent on such unnecessary things would have been better spent listening to the guest properly. The ravioli was good, as was the creamy sauce, but the spinach gave her furry teeth.

Her grilled snapper was good as well, but the fennel was a bizarre combination of under- and overcooked and looked so much like an onion that the taste startled my gf. The carrots had no taste to match their pale complexion.

My New Zealand (all NZ beef is grass fed I understand) tenderloin steak tasted delicious, as did the broccoli with almonds. I would have loved to try the sweet potato mash, but alas it was not dairy free (the waitress went to the kitchen to ask for me).

She don't listen and took the fork n spoon away and said we are not allowed to share lunch. My son told her my mum don't eat a lot and can't take whole lunch set. She keep saying we can't share lunch and walk away. If you see her face and attitude you will definitely feel humiliated and bad. Why can't they just said I am sorry our restaurant don't allow people sharing lunch..... Can someone tell me if there another restaurant in town don't allow people to share lunch. Maybe I suggest they put mininmum charge sign to let one know we need to order if you want to dine in this restaurant BAD BAD BAD service spoil my appitite

If you go in the weekend for brunch, you're bound to be disappointed with the service.
If you are willing to wait forever, the cappuccino is very good and the pancakes are mandatory.
I can easily diagnose the problem: it is the communication between the kitchen and the waiters. Plus, I think the kitchen can't handle all the orders, they probably have more tables than the kitchen can manage.

Their servers are recruited internationally, Caucasian, local Chinese, and South east Asian, and I bet the latter need improvement on their service skill.

When we asked the first Asian girl about the soup of the day, she told us it was a Soup of Carrot and Coriander, so I asked again whether the soup was a clear or a thick creme/puree base soup, she told me that it was a clear soup, and at the end it came a carrot puree soup.
proper bread came with the soup surprised!

After we placed our order, 2 of my friends went for the salad, by the time they returned back and found out bread was not offered, we then asked another asian girl about the bread, she told us there's no bread for the lunch, it's only available for dinner, then one of us asked again if there's actually any bread available at the restaurant, and she just simply said yes but not even bother to tell us we could order a bread basket as side order until my friend asked could we pay for the bread basket. At last the bread basket came and to our surprised it's a toast basket which came with butter and preserves.......oh well since we're half way through our appetizers we just took the 'Toast Basket' anyway.
here comes the Toast Basket

For the food the presentation and taste were actually nice, however once again was a bit disappointed with the way they serve...
when the 3rd asian girl came to our table with our food, though we were chatting, she just kept on shouting 'Chicken' 'Chicken' once I answered she place my dish but with the greens in front of me, then she shouted again, 'Fish' 'Fish'....ok...I know I was having a special set lunch and didn't order any wine or special drinks, however the setting of the restaurant even their staff uniform did give me an impression of a higher service level in stead of the local HK cafe.......

Because of the service I actually didn't really enjoy themeal, all I knew was the food taste not bad, and one note to those who want to try this restaurant remember no to have the table facing the street there's where you can see the Dispose Collection Area clearly.

Hope in the future if I ever have a chance to this place again, it will be more enjoyable...

They accommodated us with a small table near the front door. The layout of the restaurant still allows you to feel like you have enough space (unlike many places in HK), so we didn't feel cramped. The service was very efficient and friendly. Our drinks took a bit of time to arrive (2 orange juices and a coffee) but it was worth the wait. The juice was freshly squeezed and my coffee was a lovely, freshly-brewed Illy with a biscotti. The waitress brought over a cup of fresh cream for my coffee when I had already asked for soy milk. She quickly exchanged it for soy milk and this was the only error the staff made the whole meal. The brunch menu has a great selection with a lot of nice ingredients and slightly different choices from several of the standard brunch places in Central. The prices are quite standard for Central. I had the breakfast bruschetta (which is very similar to eggs benedict) and it came with a side of bacon. Toasted flatbread covered in minced tomatoes with poached eggs, spinach and hollaindase sauce on-top. It was a large portion and quite satisfying. My friend ordered their big english breakfast and had nothing to complain about. My boyfriend however ordered the breakfast burrito and was very disappointed in their portion size! We were laughing at him because both my friend and I had almost ordered the same thing based on the menu description. It sounded great on the menu served with avocado, eggs, sour cream and salsa. But I do agree that it was meager for the price. Despite that, we really enjoyed our experience at Oolaa. Our breakfast stretched out for about 2.5 hours and we relaxed and chatted after finishing our meal. It's quite a chilled atmosphere with good music, bustling staff and a lovely ambiance. We checked out their regular dinner menu as well and it seems promising. We'll likely come back again to give it another try.

Back in November I visited Oolaa with M and B for tea. I remember it was a weekend, because the other patrons were diving into breakfast-y items which looked so mouth-watering I vowed to return for a proper meal.

For tea B and I only managed a cappuccino and for M, a mango crumble. The cappuccino was not bad and the biscotti on the side was a nice touch, though on a more recent experience a latte my friend ordered was very dry, throwing the froth/milk/espresso proportions out of line.

"cappuccino"
tall fluff and cocoa powder a nice touch

"mango crumble" ($65)
mangoes, crumble topping, vanilla ice cream, fluff
The mango crumble was quite average, the crumble mixture could've been better - more sweet and buttery and crunchy. The portion was quite small for its price too - my initial thought when it arrived was 'that's it?!'. The ice cream was very average, tasted like... Dreyers.

Anyway, fast forward to a couple months later, I was here for dinner with several friends for an early dinner. We started off with an appetizer of pork belly lollipops.

"Pork Belly Lollipops" ($95)
If the name didn’t sound intriguing enough, allow me to describe how tasty it was. Layers of crispy skin, fat, lean meat, fat then lean mean again, all slathered with a sweet dark glaze which was made of I think primarily hoisin sauce, soy and sugar. The only slight problem was that I thought the lean meat was a little too chewy, not fork tender as I hoped….

"Pumpkin, Asparagus & Couscous Salad" ($110)
with green pea, chick pea, coriander and a mint yogurt (far back in the pic)
This dish was very light, and the couscous was perfectly cooked, and seasoned quite well. I also liked the small bits of pumpkin and bell peppers mixed throughout.

"Lemongrass and Chilli King Prawns" ($195)
with Singapore noodles, sesame honey glazed pak choy.
There were three prawns slit and grilled, but they lacked in flavour, and was a tad overcooked. The noodles was where all the spice went and after a couple fork fulls there was just too much chilli for A. I agree they could have been more light-handed with the chilli but what disappointed was the lack of other flavours in the noodles apart from spice and pepper, and the overcooked prawns.

"Glazed Soy Salmon" ($165)
with cauliflower mash, grilled vine tomatoes and broccolini.
The salmon was the star - still pink on the inside and melt-in-your-mouth tender. The glaze was on the sweeter side, but nonetheless good. The cauliflower mash was pretty good too, and a lighter alternative to the commonly served potato mash.

"Smoores" ($80)
S'mores is an American sweet snack, usually where there is BBQ / camp fires, where a toasted marshmallow gets sandwiched between chocolate and graham crackers. This divine treat was deconstructed a little at Oolaa - so they had a home-made gingery cookie, with house-made marshmallow that was torched, and a chocolate sauce for dipping. However, for the price, what was served was hardly worthy in my opinion...

All in all, pretty good food and very interesting menu. If you forget the outside trash collection site, inside the restaurant will definitely suit most occasions. If you want something casual, there's the cafe on one side. If you're a smoker, there's a terrace for outdoor dining. Otherwise, pick the amber fine dining section with big and small tables, like what we did!

Life cannot be better when you can spend a wonderful Sunday afternoon with 3 lovely ladies over Brunch + Desserts! It certainly made the my day before Monday less miserable. I wish every Sunday can be the as eventful but of course at different venues. The culture of Sunday Brunch has been trending over the last few years in Hong Kong based on my observation especially with the number of establishments offering such menus. However, there are only a handful to be honest and there are more people like myself who are getting used to getting up late over the weekends and then head for brunch. Another interesting thing I realized is that people heading for brunch nowadays are increasing more causal, particularly ladies who obviously choose not to put any make up on. Don't get me wrong but I am just surprised, that's all.

Located in the middle of the older district of Hong Kong in Sheung Wan, Oolaa exerts quite a different atmosphere and scenery compared with the surrounding setting. Half pub and half dining area, it clearly tries to suit different crowds at the same time on any given day. It was quite a walk to reach there from Central so I was pretty hungry by the time I arrived. As soon as we were all settled down in the dining area, it was time to order! I ordered the Breakfast Pizza because I was curious about. I may not seem like an adventurous person but when it comes to food, I can be! The price I have to pay for being curious was ... carbs overload! With potatoes chunks and cheese as toppings, even for a potato and pizza lover like myself it was a bit too much.

The Eggs Benedict (buttered baby spinach and button mushrooms) was love at first sight. At least its look! So ... round and so clean-cut with its presentation. The cherry tomatoes were asking me to eat them in one single bite! The poached eggs had running yolk coming out as soon as I put my knife into it but the whole dish was not of optimal temperature when served. I was a little disappointed with food temperature to say the least but in terms of flavor, the combination of butter spinach and mushrooms together with the eggs more than compensated the shortfall.

The Beer Battered fish and chips was ... boring but it certainly reminded me about my trip in London a few months ago. Batter was a bit too thin to my liking and the shape of it was ... more like fish sticks. I like my fish in one big slab served on newspaper (FT preferred haha).

Pork Belly Lollipops with a spicy Hoisin BBQ sauce. You are right, the word Lollipops got my attention already and I had to be ordered! H encouraged me as well!
As the name suggested, it was basically pork belly on stick. Sorry actually, with the Hoisin BBQ sauce, it was Chinese style Pork Belly on a stick to be exact. A truly Chinese inspired lollipop. Savory lollipops. Oh right, the skin was quite crispy but the Hoisin sauce was slightly overpowering indeed.

Hello Strawberry Pavolva! Should I or should I now eat you right away???? It was huge! The sauce and the sliced strawberries were a bit too tangy for me but it was a light and fluffy Pavlova nonetheless.

Nice to meet you Mango Crumble! But I like your cousin Apple Crumble more! I am sure it was quite difficult to make because mango generate greater amount of moisture when cooked. The crumble part was nice but it was the entire piece that matters. If you are a mango fan and like to try this, do give it a try.

I wasn't sure what inspired the Banana Split here but I did like it! Let's be fair, yes they did warn me saying that it was COMPLETED DE-CONSTRUCTED, but still! They should have named it differently or perhaps burlee the banana a bit more because it was more like sauce to me.

Bye Bye Banana Split! I now welcome S'mores!!!! Huge plate of it as well! Quite funny the way they presented it but I liked how I got to figure out by playing! Yes, I do play with my food as you can see by now. Note: It is not for the light hearted because having this at the end of a full meal requires the courage and stomach and appetite of a lion! unless you are like me who self-claim to have 4 stomachs! It was hard to go wrong by dipping a Graham cookie into the chocolate dipping and then the torches marshmallow and top it with another cookie. Actually, I think you can eat it however you like it, it is hard to go wrong. Invent your own version of S'more, completely de-constructed if you like! But in any case, No matter how creative you are, it would not be the same when you are not making S'mores over campfire!!

Likes:
- Not of optimal temperature but still alright in terms of flavors (and poached eggs with running yolk!)
-Atmosphere is quite relaxing during the weekend, can be quite noisy as well in the bar area but some prefer it that way especially when a game is on!

Dislikes:
- Breakfast Pizza
