My mom loves the seedless dried plums from Chan Yee Jai, so I would visit this shop whenever my mom runs out of her supply. Everytime I go to the shop, my brother would ask me to get him a vegetarian pork knuckle with shrimp roe (蝦子扎蹄). I never understood his obsession until I got one for myself this time.I went to the shop around 6:30 on a Saturday afternoon. I went to the shop around 6:30 on a Saturday afternoon. There wasn't a lot of traffic, and my brother stopped the car two shops away while I went into the shop.
There were 3 staff members in the shop but no customers when I walked in, another customer showed up while I was shopping.
I got my mom's dried plums and proceeded to the cashier where the 蝦子扎蹄 was located. I also got 2 蝦子扎蹄 and a box of Bird's Nest Cakes while at the cashier.
My brother had his 扎蹄 as soon as I brought it back to the car. He told me that it would taste better heated, so I waited till I got home to heat up the 扎蹄 in the microwave to eat it. After I took the first bite, I understood my brother's obsession. There were so many layers of beancurd sheets tightly rolled together and a lot of shrimp roe stuffed inside. Since there were so many layers in the roll, it had a nice bite and wasn't loose and puffy like other vegetarian rolls. The shrimp roe gave the roll a nice flavor without overpowering the beancurd sheets.
I shared the box of Bird's Nest Cakes with my mom.
