I have confirmed with the waitress that they changed their chef, and everything made sense right away. This is not the Bistro Du Vin I know anymore. This is my first visit since they moved to this new location. Waitress asked if we would like to start with still or sparkling water. Since she made it very specific that they don’t serve tap water, I was left with the only choice to pay extra for still water. Not until the table next to us was told by another waitress that they also serve warm water (presumably boiled tap water) which is free of charge, I realised I was being ripped off. Moreover, the bottle was not sealed like every other restaurant would provide, and the water tastes exactly like tap to me, yet we were charged $30 extra for it.
We went for the dinner set menu, which included a ham and terrine platter with baguettes (terrine was good but the pathetically few slices of ham and salami were cheaper than those you could get from supermarket), and a pot of not so fresh clams which tasted fishy and slimy, which they tried to cover up with spices but failed to do so. The appetisers were bad, but what came next was even worse than I could have imagined.
The Lobster and Prawn Linguine used to be their signature dish, but it had turned into a nightmare that almost triggered kidney failure. The entire dish was so salty as if I was submerging my tongue into brine. I took one bite and couldn’t help to return it back to the kitchen. Surprisingly the waitress came back in a few minutes and told me that the chef said that’s the way it should taste like, as if I did not have the slightest idea of how French cuisine was supposed to be. I insisted to return the dish and asked the waitress to scratch this item off the bill. The only thing edible was the prawn which was not touched by the sauce. Lobster meat was slightly over cooked and chopped into small pieces. The other dish was M9 beef fillet was okay, and was the only dish that filled our stomach. But the butter sauce on the side was better to be left alone as it was also packed with salt. I also found some burnt bits of fries on the plate.
Last thing was Madeleine with chocolate mousse, the only dessert option on the menu. For $600 per person I expected something more than a snack that other French restaurants would provide for free on top of a proper dessert. The Madeleine was freshly baked, which I would give credit for it, and it was the best dish of the night.
The manager came with the bill, without a word of apology but with a 20% discount on the bill before service charge. I wonder if the chef had ever tasted his dishes before serving, or if he was a heavy smoker with ruined pellets. For a dinner set experience I find it to be incomplete, and I would suggest to go for other better options.
