Have tried various french style and store-bough rotisserie chicken around Central so thought I'd give this a go, and it was by far the best chicken I have had. Set at the Soho district on Staunton Street, Flaming Frango is famous for their house blend Piri Piri marinade, featuring a wide selection of signature chicken dishes including portion-wise roasted chicken, burgers and Mediterranean wraps.

Starting with a few finger-licking side dishes, the Piri Piri chicken wings are meaty and juicy, whereas the portobello mushroom strips impress impeccably for its crispy skin and the spicy pirioli dip.

The quarter of chicken leg and thigh is marinated in their famous hot sauce for 24 hours, flame-grilled and is served with options of mint & coriander sauce. Another popular order will be the signature chicken burger with a grilled portobello mushroom, halloumi cheese, sweet caramelized onion and thick-cut piri piri fries.

The dinner started with an appetizer, Chicken & Mushroom Croquettes. Simply mixed the minced chicken and diced mushroom together and then form it into a ball shape. Next, dipped the balls into the batter and bread crumbs and deep fried them. It is a rather simple starter, however the taste is remarkable and delightful. You may eat it with Mint & Coriander or the mild spicy of pirioli.

After that Portobello Mushroom Strips has been served to the table, this is a meatless dish that is vegan friendly. The sliced Portobello is crispy on the surface and juicy within, which can totally delight the vegetarians. The deep fried Portobello is a bit oily, hence I suggest eating it with the mild spicy pirioli to lighten the oily flavor.

Halloumi Cheese Sticks is absolutely amazing, the pan-fried goat cheese topped with a glove of orange and half of a cherry tomato. The sheep’s milk flavor and the sweetness are in well balance, also that hint of sour vinegar can definitely neutralized the heaviness. Nevertheless it would be too much to finish four pieces on your own (That’s why don’t be selfish! Lol).

All the dishes are generally made with chicken, so is this Classic Chicken Frango Burger. The slightly toasted burger buns are filled with a thick piece of chicken fillet, a sliced pineapple, tomato and lettuce. The sweet and sour pineapple can freshen up the whole burger, you won’t feel too heavy or  guilty about eating this burger. Yet, I think the chicken fillet is not juicy enough.

Finally, the signature dish for this restaurant, Piri Piri Chicken has arrived the table!!! It makes use of various spicy and strong spices and sprinkle all around the chicken, next flame grilled the whole marinated chicken. I chose the chicken drumsticks and breast combination with mild spicy, yet I would recommend medium spicy for a bit more exciting flavor. It is not a boneless chicken, but there are still huge pieces of meat along with the bones. Just that it would be better if the grilled chicken is more tender and juicy though.

Being quite familiar with Quarry Bay, I know there is another restaurant featuring their housemate Pari Pari Chicken, but after trying at Flaming Frango, I think I have found my new favourite restaurant to enjoy some decent tender chicken!

The high protein chicken focus restaurant has recently refreshed their menu by adding in more healthy varieties including some seafood and vegetarian options.

Pari Pari Chicken Wings $145/12pcs

What’s not to love to start with these finger licking wings to share among friends? The skin was grilled until just slightly crispy while the flesh remained moist. The powerful smoky flavour was what impressed me, a perfect compliment with their daily fresh housemade sauce in mild, medium and hot spiciness.

Mediterranean Salad $98

One of their new items on the menu, this dish makes salad never boring because the chewy yet still soft halloumi gives a unique texture when biting into it. The salad was freshly tossed with some mixed peppers, cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, mixed greens, olives, and just a light dressing to keep the calorie low.

Halloumi Cheese Sticks $78

It's hard to find halloumi dish in Hong Kong in my opinion so I am glad that to see this dish on the menu. Evenly sliced sticks were dressed with balsamic vinegar, fresh mint, orange wedges, and cherry tomato. The sweet and sour taste from the citric from the fruit and the freshness from the herbs perfectly complimenting the rather light yet dense cheese dish.

Halved Chicken with 2 sides $198

You cannot miss their infamous Pari Pari Chicken when coming to Flaming Frango. You can also choose two of your favourite sides to go with the dish. We have chosen some Pari Pari fries with pirioli and coleslaw, while you could also choose veggie, rice, garlic bread, mixed leaves & Parmesan or mashed potatoes!

Comparing to Flames in Quarry Bay, I found this restaurant serves a lot better chicken in terms of flavour and moisture. The grilled smokey taste was very prominent, and the housemade sauces are ranged with spiciness which I liked a lot.

Prawn Fajitas $168

Another new item on the menu, prawns are always considered healthy and this delicate seafood is prepared with onion and pepper, served with sour cream, guacamole and pico de gallo. The size was just perfect to share among 4-5 people. The warm tortillas are grilled and it went well with the slightly spicy prawns and all the condiments. It would be a great dish for those who don't want to consume too much meat in one seating but the serving size was definitely meant for sharing.

Lychee and Lemongrass Colada $85

The chicken restaurant also offers a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. As a drinker, I have ordered a glass of Lychee and Lemongrass Colada. If you have ever tried a colada that is not made with pineapple, you have to come here and try because they made a good balance between the sweet and oriental taste of this coconut based cocktail. If you are not a drinker, they would be more than happy to make any virgin version drink, just for you!

I doubt there's anything authentic here. From looking around, it seems like there's a popular  'piri piri chicken' chain Nando's (I've never been there) and this place is more copying that than anything in, let's say, Mozambique. But I'm no stickler for authenticity, especially in those cases when I wouldn't know it if it bit me in the hindquarters. So on to a purely gustatory appraisal...

supersupergirl in a review below says that the chicken was better on her second visit, because the chicken wasn't spicy. I'll second her assessment, but not her value judgment. Yes, the chicken is not spicy. I don't really see the point of naming your chicken [translation] firey hot chilli chicken [/translation] and then not making it spicy. That's like, a Doritos-level move there, bud. Anyway...

The chicken is really good. Unlike, say, La Rotisserie, it doesn't make you want to take a shower to wash off all the grease soaking through your pours afterwards. And unlike, say, Healthy Chicken (which I eat at twice a month), it's extremely succulent. Unlike all comers, it's intensely charred-- you can't really see this because most of it's on the bottom in the photo. I quite liked the chicken, and highly recommend it.

It comes with two sauces, a quote-unquote spicy one (mildly spicy) and a cilantro-mint one (very minty). Both are pretty good, neither is all that fantastic.

For sides I got the fries and the coleslaw. The fries were great. Thin ones, but cooked nice and crispy and excellently seasoned-- they didn't need sauce to stand out. The sauce they came with was good too. It was creamy and mildly spicy like the "firey hot" sauce. I also recommend the fries.

On the side I got coleslaw. My wife thought this was an odd choice for me, given my aversion to copious amounts of mayo. But I really like coleslaw, when it's crispy cabbage and carrots in a *light* dressing. Yeah, it rarely is. I'd probably have liked this if it came with a colander.

My wife got the same thing as me but with different sides. Roast veggies-- I had a piece of broccoli and it was pretty good-- and mashed potatoes. Somehow it came out with salad instead of potatoes, but the staff fixed the error by giving her free salad and bringing the potatoes shortly thereafter.

Alas, I don't recommend the potatoes. You kinda gotta go for it with the butter and cream if you want good mashed potatoes. These were chunky and dry. Not a house specialty.

I quite liked the food here. As far as chicken and fries go, it's a healthier alternative to LR and fried chicken places. I might even recommend it to a friend of mine who eats La Rotisserie twice a day.

My main complaint is that the tables are so close together I (a) was more or less forced to eavesdrop on everyone around me and (b) didn't want to talk that much, what with everyone eavesdropping on me. Also, the lack of spice. Honestly. Just call yourself 'Grilled Chicken Shack' if that's what you're going to do. Skip the song and dance about chillies from Africa (ooo!) if you don't put them in anything.

I'm a big fan of Nando's and always miss their chicken since I left Brit, wonder why there isn't anything or even similar stuff in hong kong?? No doubt that locals love spicy food and they also love chicken (I mean, who doesn't??). So there you go, piri piri chicken is the answer and yet there's none, at least I haven't seen one.

With next to none expectation, we ordered a whole chicken and a portion of wings. Wings arrived first and from the aroma and the charcoal marks, I already can tell this is some serious good stuff and not just your avaerge roasted chicken with spicy sauce. Very well sesoned and spicyness and saltyness is well balanced. I love wings and this got to be the king of all hot wings!

Then the whole chicken, wings are much easier for chefs as its really hard to mess up, on the otherhand, a whole chicken takes a lot more skills in terms of both marinating and cooking it. I took the breast while my bf took the legs and rest. I can hardly remember how many time I said over the dinner, "OMG this is so so good, can't believe this is even better than Nando's!!!"

So exactly how good? Marinates go all the way into every fiber of the meat, breast are known to be chewy and blend but this one, not at all, so so tender and extremely flavoursome. Many times we had chciken that is tasty but just on the skin, once de skin, especially the breast, became dry and tastless. This is why I praise this chicken highly as their breast is just....... speechless

I was so thrilled and started chatting with our server and told him how good the food is, turned out he is the owner who told me their secret really is the marination process, both the lenght and the ingredients. I told him how happy I was finally have piri chicken in my hometown that even beats Nando's. I promised I will write a review to help promote this outstanding place and so I did, my first piece of review on openrice, simply because the chicken is just too good to not to share with others!!!

I am having the leftover as my luncheon now while writing this lol

The chicken was better than my previous visit because it wasn't so spicy and it was tender and juicy.
The side of rice was really good with the chicken because it was lightly flavoured with tumeric.

The chicken jam was amazing because the texture was exactly like chicken liver pate but there is no liver in it.
It tastes so good that they could sell a chicken jam salad baguette for lunch!!
The chicken jam was velvety with an intense spiciness.
Personally I liked the bread unbuttered so that I could taste the full flavours of chicken jam.

A simple salad of tomatoes, cucumber, caramelized oranges, halloumi cheese, red peppers, and olives.
This was delicious because everything tasted good together especially the halloumi which gave the salad some saltiness while the sweetness came from the oranges.
