It was lunch-time and understandably extremely busy, but I am so scared of rude Chinese waiters at busy dim-sum places in Hong Kong. They have a bad temper and attitude and no matter how nice you are, they're still going to look angry and act too busy to talk to you.
We kept trying to speed up the pace of delivery of our orders as we only had two hours for lunch. Unfortunately food came too slowly and their bad service didn't make us feel any better.
The dishes we had: crab soup; deep-fried spring rolls and cha-siu dumplings; prawn dumplings; siu mai; traditional Cantonese-style soy-sauce chicken; fried rice with prawns; barbeque pork, broccoli and prawns, deep-fried fish and green beans; and red bean soup for dessert.
I have to say that every dish was memorable: memorably bad. The pork was terrible. I have never eaten anything that tasted as bad. I can't even tell what it is--expired tofu skin in HP sauce? Most of the dishes were very greasy and left me bloated till the end of the next day. The fish was way too peppery and salty, and I'm not sure the fried rice could be called fried rice. It had a thick layer of cornstarch sitting on top of the worst-quality rice grains. Crab soup consisted of very few pieces of crab meat and lots of flour, starch, chicken powder, salt and sugar. Cha siu dumplings and prawn dumplings were alright, but the prawn dumplings had a very rubbery and thick skin, and no soy sauce was served with it. I did not have the dessert.
I will not recommend anyone to come here.
After waiting an hour to be seated, it was another 10 minutes until tea cups, saucers, bowls and plates were unceremoniously slammed onto our table by one of the waiters, who then skulked off, never to reappear.
Dim sun laden trollies were whisked past by elderly ladies, all whom seemed in a tremendous rush to reach the next table. We were too busy trying to catch the next trolly to enjoy much conversation, and spent most of the meal craning our necks to see what was on offer.
We successfully flagged down some shrimp and some vegetable dumplings but they were disappointingly stodgy, and uninspired compared to what we've previously eaten elsewhere.
It soon became apparent there was more items on the menu than there were being wheeled around. The trolleys were pushing the un-wanted dim sum ---a never-ending supply of sticky rice in lotus leaves, deep fried spring rolls and century (old) eggs. No sign of fried squid with spicy salt, baked BBQ pork puffs, or deep fried dumplings with shrimp, which were what we actually wanted.
After a half hour of trolly-tracking fatigue, we waved down a manager to order the aforementioned missing items, who scribbled them down on a scrap of paper and scurried off. Ten minutes later, it was a trolly tout, not the manager, that returned to unapologetically inform us that none of our chosen dishes were unavailable.
In two years living in Hong Kong this ranks as the most disappointing culinary experience, especially considering all of the hype. If City Hall was a movie, it would be The Phantom Menace.
We arrived at about 1:30pm on a Sunday and had to wait approximately 45 minutes, which is not obscene but also not really worth it. Once seated, we noticed the first cart passing by had something called deep fried spicy squid, which seemed quite exciting, so we ordered it. It was pretty bad. Lukewarm, of course. Not spicy in the least. Sweet coating, maybe? The outside wasn't crispy and the inside, while not tough to chew, was no one's idea of tender. Poor showing, D Next we got a pretty basic classic: shrimp dumplings. These actually were hot. It's tough to make this terrible, but nothing really stood out, either in terms of the shrimp or the wrapper. OK, C+ This dish was called something like "deep fried sticky dumpling". I've had it many times before at dim sum-- it's got a crisp exterior, right on top of a chewy glutinous rice shell, with marinated minced meat inside. While these were lukewarm, that really is the only demerit for them, because this version was excellently crisp on the exterior, and the filling was nicely balanced in flavor (sometimes it can get a little over-sweet for me). Great, B+ The spring rolls were on the bad side of mediocre. Unsurprisingly, lukewarm. But their biggest failing, in my opinion, was that there was hardly anything in them. It was mostly just crispy shell. As we all know, fillings maketh spring rolls. Mediocre, C- Finally, we got pea shoot and fungus dumplings. (3 but only 2 pictured.) This was my favorite dish of the meal. They had next to no structural integrity, and I had to eat mine with a spoon. But they were piping hot and the filling was excellent in flavor and refreshingly vegetable-y, given the preponderance of fried food in our meal at this point. As an instance of this dish, they were truly excellent: A.
The total bill was around $240.
Here's my view: if you're a tourist, sure, you might want to make a stop here. (But really, lots of dim sum places in America and elsewhere do the cart thing, and it's not all that exciting anyway.) If you live here, then go to a place with better food, food selection, food temperature, food price, and shorter lines. I do think some of the food at Maxim's is good. It's just not worth it.
