Had this class apart, authentic Italian meal at Monteverdi Restaurant in central a few weeks ago. The ambience of the spot is extremely Italian (of course), and also very comforting, and warm. 

We began with a helping of their bread paired with olive oil and balsamic. The bread had a biscuity texture- crusty and dry outside, but slightly soft but crispy inside. Maybe not the favourite but still great!

We washed this down with a 2012 chianti- which was absolutely lovely, along with yummy potato cheese croquettes- fried to perfection!

The mains were as Mediterranean Italian as they can get. We started with their handmade trofie in pesto sauce- basically a short, thin & twisted pasta from the region of linguria served in pesto sauce topped with pine nuts.

I had their “Seabass in crazy water”. No I’m not kidding about the name. The name seabass in crazy water comes from the very fact that the broth in which the seabass is served has a very tangy flavor to it. It is a very simple dish but bursting with flavour owing to perfectly cooked fish, simple but flavourful broth, and a buttery bread to complement.

We ended the night on a sweet note with their ice cream cassata. I never knew it had Italian origins as I grew up eating this multilayered dessert in india. It was layers or cake, three types of ice cream, nuts, and deliciousness covered in smooth chocolate sauce. 

Overall a delectable meal over wine conversation and a comfortable ambience. Truly a delight 😍

Central’s Monteverdi succeeds Trattoria Caffe Monteverdi in Sai Ying Pun, a rather quaint and casual Italian eatery specialized in handmade pasta. From the name of the restaurant, the intention seems to be a transformation from neighborhood trattoria to CBD ristorante. But regardless of location, Monteverdi’s prices (set lunches aside) always reflected its ambitious focus on good quality food, and I remember its menu used to include snippets of interesting information on food history and all kinds of less commonly seen pasta.

The new Monteverdi still feels rather casual for Central, and the whole setting make it seem family- or individual-run. There are no dazzling, extravagant pieces of furniture or fanciful décor that are so characteristic of many of today’s new restaurants where all of these non-food related expenses get passed onto the diners’ bills. Central has a real deficit of restaurants that are not super posh and pricey yet delivers fine tasting food.

The menu is not an extensive one, which may be a good sign. As I have no idea whether this new place continues to be run by the same owner back in the days in SYP, I came without expectations. We were pleasantly surprised, however. Both the appetizer and the campofilone pasta that we had were memorable highlights. The pasta in particular was superb with great texture and flavor. It tasted fresh and complemented well with the tomato-based lamb ragù. The main course which was a grilled seabass was less of a star, but still solid. 

Hospitality was good and prompt overall. Our host, Chris, was a friendly guy who was both professional and passionate. 

We will be returning to try Monteverdi’s other pastas.

The potato croquettes were stuffed with white truffle and cheese - not a lot of it but enough for the truffle flavor to be discernible. If you come a little hungry, these would surely delight.

Maccheroncini Campofilone with lamb ragù
The highlight of the meal. The pasta tasted remarkably fresh and picked up all of the goodness of the lamb ragù with tomato sauce. Everything was perfect.

Mixed Seafood Cartoccio $278
來到意大利餐廳,少不免要點一份意粉來吃;而店家的意粉全是人工新鮮製作,更加不能錯過~
經店員介紹來吃這款,「Cartoccio 」的中文解釋就是用「紙包烤」,即這道菜就是「紙包烤雜錦海鮮」的意思,看到這個就覺得蠻特別吧? 更特別的是她的賣相,活像一夥大糖果啊~ 非常可愛!先拍照再吃!還是頭一次看這樣的賣相,店員介紹這樣用焗爐紙包裹著意粉和海鮮再烤會均勻受熱點,就能鎖住鮮味不會流失~ 真的長知識了!
打開焗爐紙就散發出濃郁的蕃茄醬味跟炭燒過的海鮮味~ 令人食指大動啊!這次店家用上Tagliatelle這款意粉,是一款面積較寬的長麵,有點像河粉啊!意粉的掛汁力十足,每一口都嚐到醬汁的味道~ 由於是手工製意粉,口感更爽彈又有蛋香,非常好吃的質感!蕃茄醬味道調得惹味好口,酸酸甜甜好開胃!海鮮配料同樣出色,種類也多:魷魚圈、三文魚粒、魚柳跟藍青口,鮮味十足,還有一隻炭燒過的大蝦,火味濃郁更加惹味~ 全道菜近乎沒有任何可以挑剔的地方啊!

Grilled Rib Eye - 8oz $438
主菜選了這個8安士的烤黑安格斯牛肉眼扒,再指定5分熟,一上菜就聞到那個炭燒的味道,由於我跟男友同樣喜歡以炭燒來烤肉做法,這道菜完全令人食指大動~
不得不讚店家在掌握牛肉的熟成度非常有經驗,5分熟做得剛好,切開還是帶粉嫩的效果,由於黑安格斯牛富含大理石紋油花,油脂分佈平均,烹調過後變得香口惹味,加上燒烤過的火味更感香氣十足!牛味濃郁,肉質鮮嫩又多肉汁,紮實富口感! 再加上特調的紅酒醬汁,微微的酒香令牛肉的味道更添一份層次,實在不得了~
旁邊的配菜如薯仔、茄子、翠肉瓜跟法邊豆同樣出色,烤香過後的清甜蔬菜跟火燒過的味道,同樣不能忽視啊!是一道絕對值回票價的菜色!

Zabaglione $118
相信這個甜點對香港人來說非常陌生,主因是在香港真的不是有很多地方可以吃到,但其實這個是意大利的一個家傳戶曉的傳統甜點,中文叫做「沙巴翁」(Sabayon),這也是Tiramisu的原形版本啊,還未創出Tiramisu前就已經有這個甜點了,而且做法也很類近:同樣用上蛋黃、砂糖跟甜酒來製成,不過這個的做法更簡單也更經典~
第一次接觸Zabaglione,入口先嘗到蛋香再散發出酒的香氣,口感更像是絲綢狀的Tiramisu,濃稠且不失輕盈,絕對是色香味兼備!傳統吃法會把Zabaglione盛裝在玻璃杯中,用杯旁的手指餅拌著吃,在店家吃到的一樣,口感更加豐富,美中不足是只有兩塊手指餅,跟男友一人一塊轉眼就吃完,有點不夠喉呢~

店家雖位於中環的核心地段,不過由於是樓上鋪的關係,甫出升降機門感覺就來到另一個時空一樣,由門面到內在裝潢、佈局、氛圍都散發出歐陸氣息,柔和的燈光、雅緻的傢俱、講究的餐具、一個又一個放滿紅酒嘅紅酒牆架等,都給予人一個浪漫華麗的情調,晚上來的感覺更好
值得一讚是店員的服務~ 非常貼心!由進門到離開也是服務周全,會細心地向客人介紹每一道菜式,又會在進餐途中不時觀察顧客需要,就連享用晚餐後離開也會送別客人其感謝蒞臨光顧~ 令整個用餐體驗大大加分!
這店無論是環境、服務、食物的性價比也是非常高,很適合與另一半來慶祝特別日子,又或是與知心好友來談心聯誼啊~

I had come down to this restaurant with a friend during friday, somebody had suggested that this place has amazing hand made pasta and that the taste and structure is quite good.  the rustic dishes which they have at hand especially the lasagna is quite good. would definitely reccomend the lasagna as it is really meaty and is definitely gonna fill ur stomach for sure.mine was definitely filled. anyhow along with the food i think they have thier own monteverdi wines which i think isn't quite comm
