As an ex-pat American ABC born and raised in NYC relocated to HK, I now find myself constantly in search of cuisine and food that reminds me of home. While on HK island there are some fairly authentic Western food restaurants available, the farther away from the epicenter of HK island one goes, it seems obvious the quality of Western cuisine plummets. No surprise really and not a criticism of HK - just stating facts.Recently finding myself spending more time in Tsuen Wan, I found myself cravin
Recently finding myself spending more time in Tsuen Wan, I found myself craving some good old, American style hamburger fare. While not really having very high expectations of success, imagine my surprise after I finally took my American friend's recommendation to make a trip to Mr. and Mrs. Burger and found out for myself that even in Tsuen Wan, one can indeed find a quality, authentic burger joint.
Shocking, I know!
Mr. and Mrs. Burger [hitherto referred to as M&MB] is a small but quite distinctively decorated shop on a great corner location. The interior is tight as is the norm for smaller HK restaurants with a number of high stool tables, but the decoration is admirably Americana-esque - a small but hopefully growing collection of American and European car license plates adorns the walls as well as wallpaper from various newspapers from around the world. The tiny kitchen is right up front and is open to customers if they want to watch their burgers magically come to life. M&MB is the lovechild of Joji and Michael, a delightful young couple who have taken a huge chance to open up a quality American-style burger joint in a decidedly local HK location like Tsuen Wan.
But...how's the food??
Take it from a red-blooded American: in a word, the fare at M&MB is quite AUTHENTIC. Other fitting adjectives include fresh, top-quality and organic ingredients and quite frankly, incredibly reasonably priced given the fare they serve.
This ain't no slap-em-together typical HK hamburger joint aiming to pull a fast one over "ignorant" locals who think McDonald's offers real hamburgers.
I have visited M&MB twice now in the span of 1 week and have been delighted with the food both times.
The first time was to sample their "Classic" burger and indeed it did not disappoint. A reasonably sized Angus beef burger was cooked to order and topped with organic tomatoes, arugala lettuce and bacon as well as a tasty homemade secret sauce, all sandwhiched between a soft, flour dusted bun. The fries were 100% quality potatoes fried to the proper crispiness and were certainly not store bought garbage. Throw in a small but choice selection of quality micro-brewery beers and you got all you need to have a great, authentic, quality American-style burger.
My second visit to M&MB I decided to give one of their in-house specials a shot: a homemade, fresh daily deep fried Crabmeat Patty served with all the usual burger fixings. While normally a bit of a purist when it comes to burgers, I was absolutely delighted with how fresh and tasty the crab patty burger was. This time I also went for the potato wedges with cheese and was not disappointed.
I don't want to gush too much here. But honestly, given both the location and the prices and factoring in the quality of fare, M&MB is IMO a must try. This place absolutely deserves some heavy recognition because of how fresh, organic and truly tasty all the ingredients are. There is obviously a lot of love and care behind M&MB and it shows through in their offerings. The staff is friendly and attentive, the menu is creative and varied and the overall feeling is that M&MB is offering top-quality American-style burger fare in a decidedly local HK location. Daring, gutsy and honestly, I wish them nothing but success.
Absolutely recommend M&MB without any hesitation at all. They will happily prepare everything to order and when you walk away your belly will indeed be happy. Not to mention your wallet. Quite incredible given the high quality of all the ingredients Joji and Michael have chosen to offer their customers.
Go visit M&MB. If you're a real burger lover in HK, I simply cannot see how you could ever be disappointed.
Truly a great find...
