Fast-food restaurants are popping up everywhere in Hong Kong and Subway, an international fast-food chain of restaurants, is one of them! I have eaten at Subway before but never had I been to this Subway restaurant, located at shop D of the Upper Deck in Star Ferry, Central, the restaurant is open from Monday to Sunday from 7am to 10pm.
I entered the restaurant; the smell of freshly baked bread filled my nose as I walked across the tiles which were as white as freshly fallen snow. The restaurant was clean, tidy and average-sized but spacious. The colours of the walls were light yellow which made the atmosphere very happy and welcoming, it also helped that the whole restaurant was brightly lit.
The staff was an enthusiastic, friendly bunch and never failed to smile. Every word was understood when I went to order and they tried their best to make my meal as quick as they could. Although the service was fast, it was not as fast as it is in other fast-food restaurants, but considering the quality of the food, it was understandable.
Subway sells better quality and healthier food, if you think about the ingredients in the food sold in fast-food restaurants. Not only is there a large variety of sandwiches to choose from- but you can also customize your own meal, as it is made right in front of you! This way, there is almost no sandwich which Subway isn’t able to make to suit your taste buds.
The menu is not particularly large, but the food they offer are so appealing it doesn’t matter! Sandwiches, salads, salad wraps, crisps and cookies are the choices. You can choose either 6-inch or foot long sandwich depending on how hungry you are. In addition to this, there are many drink choices, if you feel like having something sweet: soft drinks, or juice, or if you feel like just water then there it is!
For starters: I had a salad wrap. The cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce and chicken topped off with honey mustard sauce all in a wrap made a great first impression. All the ingredients used tasted fresh and delicious! The salad wrap warmed me up for my main course, a 6-inch ‘Subway Melt’ straight from the oven. The melted cheese immediately spread its warmth in my mouth, together with the turkey, ham and bacon, this sandwich tasted like it fell straight from cloud 9. Dessert was two ‘White Chocolate Macadamia Nut’ cookies, which were sweet and slightly chewy, the texture neither too crunchy nor soft. However, their Pink Lemonade was so sweet; it could have been the urine of a unicorn. Not a very good choice for washing down my meal with.
An issue with Subway is that it can be considered expensive, due to the fact that it is a fast-food restaurant. However, there are set meals and ‘Sub of the Day’ which will give you great value for money! The sandwiches range from 27.80HKD to 39.80HKD and overall, my meal was 59HKD for a salad wrap, sandwich, 2 cookies and a drink. Types of payment include cash, octopus and credit card.
Overall, Subway is an extremely appetizing restaurant where the meals are just the right size to fill me up! I would give Subway 4 out of 5 star rating, because of the prices, and recommend it to everyone who likes a good sandwich.
