Great place for a quick bite -- sandwitches and sides are spot on, simple and pack a great combination of flavours. Also interesting beer selection. Had: RoastPork Sandwich with Coleslaw side, both were very good.

If you are wondering why I am expending so much air extolling the virtues of a takeout-cum-restaurant that effectively melts cheese, it's because that is my dream. I appreciate flair and technical ability and all those other things that make chefs great and food superlative, but I also like two pieces of bread with something melting in between. I like the feet-on-the-coffee-table informality of it all.
It's not just that, though. This is a food with so very many strings to its bow. Texturally, it is a delight, the buttered-crunch of the toasted bread, the oozing warm cheese making a little slick on your tongue; I can taste it now. It is also balanced, with a little carbohydrate and, well, quite a lot of fat. But really the thing that draws me, bottom lip aquiver, fork in hand, is that it is so very soothing: it is the angora jumper of food. It calls to me of cuddles and duvets and being with people who won't pull a funny face if you end up with a spaghetti-string of cheese falling from your mouth. It reminds me of being young and uncomplicated.

Yeah, there are a lot of cool dining spots to check out in Hong Kong, so many, that it's hard to keep track of them all. So when we heard about a cool little spot out at Kennedy Town, we didn't muck about, plans were made and within days we were sitting out the front of Sunday's Grocery.

I'd never been to Kennedy Town, which is the end of the line on the MRT line that runs along the front of the island. Our plan was to walk there from the Mid Levels, a tour that took us through the University of Hong Kong, which is just down the street (and around the corner) from where we live. It was quite a pleasant walk, even though it was a little hot and sticky and there may have been some lost time in the Uni, trying to get our bearings.

We'd timed our walk perfectly, and by the time we were standing outside of the very hard to miss and brightly coloured Sunday's Grocery, it was very conveniently time for lunch. Stepping inside, I was surprised by how tiny the space was, essentially just a shopfront and counter, with no room for loitering (or dining) within. I wasn't too sure what to expect to be honest.

Created by Matt Abergele and Lindsay Jang, who've an eye for creating awesome little ventures (Yardbird and RONIN being their other hotspots), Sunday's Grocery is a liquor store, curated convenience store and a takeaway sandwich shop. With our primary reason for visiting a bite of lunch, we ignored the wide variety of Japanese Whisky, sake, shochu beer and wine on offer and made a beeline for the short but interesting looking takeaway menu.

Sunday's main offering is made-to-order sandwiches, soups, pickles and fried chicken, with all options pieced together (literally) on little magnetic board. With the stark yellow and black lettering, the menu was hard to miss and easy to look over. Decisions made, it was only a few short steps over to the counter to place our order from the hip young thing behind the register. To be fair, he was an extremely friendly and helpful young guy, who helped me through the myriad of pressed juices to choose from.

With nowhere to sit inside, we made our way to a little alcove next door that was set up with milk crates of varying colours (red and yellow) that were placed in such a way that you could sit and eat your meal. It was tight and cramped, but kind of cool, just sitting on milk crates, watching the world go by and waiting for our gourmet sandwiches. While we were waiting, SC was sucking back on a Mexican Coke (with real cane sugar and not HCFC), while I went the healthier option with a 'Be Juiced' healthy detox pressed juice.

Our sandwiches arrived in fairly quick order, wrapped in red and white checkered wax paper, looking identical apart from stickers holding the rolls together. Schnitzel for me and Banh Mi for the girl.

My chicken schnitzel roll was as well put together as it was delicious. The lightly toasted turkish roll was fresh, as was the salad of lettuce and tomato, with a thin slice of breaded chicken, then finished off with a light mayonnaise and some pickles (which I extracted). The balance of ingredients to bread was just right, so it didn't feel overly heavy and I could get the distinct flavour of the chicken, which was even a little creamy tasting!

SC's Banh Mi was definitely not a traditional version of the Vietnamese favourite. Using turkish bread instead of the more traditional baguette (harking back to the French influence in Vietnam), as well as pressed pork, it was just a little odd. The pressed pork had a slightly processed flavour, and while the pickled vegetables gave the roll a more authentic flavour, it just wasn't quite right. Having said that, if we weren't expecting a Banh Mi and were just having a pork sandwich, it would have been pretty good.

Sunday's Grocery is pretty much unlike anything I'd come across in HK so far and certainly would not have been out of place in down town New York. Bright, brash and with a confidence that comes from running a couple of successful ventures, the team from Sunday's Grocery have got quite the concept happening.

I think they know it too, with an opportunity to buy merchandise along with your booze, condiments or lunch, you can buy yourself a cool t-shirt as well as a feed. Locating Sunday's Grocery in Kennedy Town was an interesting move and with an ever increasing number of expats, maybe a very canny move. I'm personally not sold on Kennedy Town, but I did like my schnitzel roll enough to want a repeat visit.... If only it was a little closer.

Oh, in case you were wondering, our visit to Sunday's Grocery was ironically on a Saturday.

It was easy to eat too because the scotch egg was neatly rested on the sandwich bun so it wasn't flimsy to handle.
Anyway eat bite was amazing because you ended up with egg white, egg yolk, the bun and the scotch egg.
The scotch egg tasted slightly different but it was divine because you could taste pepper and onions which made it moreish which was then enhanced by the scrummy egg yolk.

As an avid instagram user I was super excited when i finally got the chance to check out Kennedy Towns Sunday's Grocery. I had been stalking everyones delicious photos for weeks and I did already know the menu off by heart 😁😂 !

So straight to food.
I ordered the roast pork sandwich, ($80 HKD) and it did not disappoint!! The sandwich filling includes avocardo, red cabbage and yuzu kosho. And its honestly close to perfect.. Meat is cooked to perfection and the whole thing just melts in your mouth!

I also ordered the market chips ($38 HKD). These were pretty good too. The only issue i found were my chips at the top of the bag were too chrunchy (overlooked).. However once i got past the top layers the chips below were perectly crisp and flavoursome. And i do think the good ones outdid the bad so id order again ☺️

My friend and I sat outaide on the cute crate boxes outside the shop and i recommend doing this as its quite a nice way to enjoy the meal.
We also grabbed some drinks to accompany our mini feast, i had the house sav blanc (Californian wine) ($60 HKD) and he had one of sundays japanese highballers ($45 HKD). The wine was actually quite nice and its served in a self opening beaker, so quirky!

Having read a few reviews saying sundays is overpriced i can see why one would say this but i think for the environment, food and location it is pretty standard. Id definitely go again!
Seating area out the front!

Excited for my order! A Katsu Sando Sandwich, A Regular Fried Chicken & Korean Chicken Meal: with two sides- chicken soup and market chips! The market chips were delicious- all these variety of root vegetables in a delicious honey, sweet sesame glaze and olive oil. I really liked the chips…but everything else was sadly a disappointment for me!

It was a meal- so I was surprised when there was only 4 pieces. HKD$110 for 4 pieces…I’m going to have to say, the price is a a bit steep and I was really disappointed with it. The Korean chicken was nothing special but the fried chicken was still cooked very well.

The sandwich itself was not bad! Buttered white toast grilled to perfection, but perhaps I ordered wrong- because I wasn’t expecting the Katsu Sando patty to taste like that. By the time I ate it- only 15-20 minutes after it was given to me, it was already getting very soggy and cold! :/ But perhaps I need to try the other sandwiches…..we’ll see.

My sandwich was the chicken schnitzel: "tahini kewpie, romaine, tomato, pickles." I thought as a fried chicken sandwich, it was good. The chicken was tender and juicy, it had lots of lettuce and tomatoes, and the mayo ("tahini kewpie"-- is it tahini mixed with kewpie???) was at least somewhat restrained. (The bread on both sandwiches, I should say, was very good-- flavorful but still light enough for a sandwich.) If I didn't have to go to Kennedy town, I'd get this again. Good, B+

This is really a "local" place in the sense that if you lived around the corner from it, it'd be great, because fried chicken and beer are great. But if you don't live around the corner from it, you might as well just eat the fried chicken and beer near you. Now if only someone near me would start making fried chicken and beer...

Other Info. : The chips on the menu are crisps and they're way too sugary for my taste.

At Sunday's Grocery, they sell fast food, alcohol, condiments and these iceballs which are served in fancy cocktails.

I would have ordered the sandwich but since I was going to have more food that evening I settled for the Chicken fingers.
Next time I am going to try the Jewish penicillin.

The chicken fingers came in a sturdy and trendy box lined with grease paper.
There was kewpie mayonnaise and ketchup to accompany the chicken.

While I was there, I picked up some really nice matchsticks which were in a cute cigarette packet the same size as a normal matchbox.

I have been wanting to check out Sunday's Grocery since my sister told me about it!
This afternoon, I picked up a sandwich before heading to work.
While waiting for my sandwich, I was told that Sunday's grocery is Yardbird's third project after Ronin.
Also, whisky is their thing if you care for alcohol.

Environment & Hygiene:
I love the set up and tones of colours of this place. There is a selection of alcohol on the right, and some other goods on the left beside the huge menu, which I totally missed and foolishly asked if they had a menu.
 Opps.. Ha.

Service:
The staff were friendly, and I was handed this pamphlet while wondering where the menu was.

Taste & Value:
I decided on the Chicken Schnitzel sandwich ($80). This sandwich had pickles and veggies in it. The ingredients were very fresh, and I loved how the bread was so warm and soft. The pickles made the sandwich interesting, but a little salty. The chicken was juicy and not greasy at all.  I don't want to say this, but the first bite reminded me of McDonald's Chicken Burger!
Of course, this was made with better ingredients and was 10 times more fresh and tastier.

Final Verdict:
The sandwich was good, but quite expensive? I would go again though, I want to try their other sandwiches. The little knick knacks they have are so cute.
