continue reading

Summary: Authentic food, good fit-out and service. Pricing a bit higher than my usual target, but still reasonable.Goods: Fit-out is good. They serve hot tea for free of charge. Food is well presented and taste good - authentic enough with some minor adjumentments. Bads: Not a lot. However, for a stingy person like I am, I think I can find Thai food with better price (not better fit-out though, there's always some trade-off). Damage: The two of us spent HKD363 (incl. 10% SC) for lunch (public holiday), so HKD181 per person, but a note is we were very full!We arrived at around 11:55am and they were about just to open so we didn't have to wait at all. It was a Monday with public holiday, and they also don't have lunch menu. I can't comment if they have it for weekday though. The waitstaffs are a mix between Thais and locals, but I think the cook are Thais (after talking to the Thai waitstaff). They're all quite polite and service is good!.What we orderedWe ordered 3 dishes and extra rice. To be honest, this is a bit much for 2 persons, but we finished the meal anyways so I'd say if you're very hungry this is probably the right amount. The food was very fast (we're the first table afterall) and they all arrived at the same time. The first dish is the #101 Yum Woon Sen (ยำวุ้นเส้น) or spicy vermincelli salad at HKD70 (+10%). It is in snack section, so the portion reflects as such. It comes with one shrimp a few peices of squid, some minced pork, and plenty of peanuts (my wife was saying it's a bit much but I'm totally fine with that). We didn't tell them we're Thai at first so this is their usual recipe (usually They will spice it up for Thais), but I still think it's a bit spicy for the local (for me it is totally fine). Otherwise, I think it taste good - my personal preference is a bit sweeter (and I think most of what I had in HK is like that too). The vermincelli is nicely cooked, it's not too soft with a bit of snap to it. Overall it is authentic. The second dish is #303 Tom Yum Po Tak (ต้มยำโป๊ะแตก) or spicy seafood soup at HKD100 (+10%). This is a bit different to the usual Tom Yum most people think of. It is clear broth (no milk), no chilli paste (no red colour), usually very little sweetness, and has sweet basil added in. I personally order this any time I have the chance, as it's harder to get it right! This comes with a few pieces of shrimps, 2 pieces of big mussles, a few pieces of squid and fish, and straw mushroom. I'd say it's quite generous for the price! Taste wise I love it! It is exactly how it should be.... although as a real Thai I think it could be spicier, which most local would probably disagree with. Will definitely recommend. The thrid dish is #504 Pla Rard Phrik (ปลาราดพริก) or fried fish with spicy sauce HKD130 (+10%). I have mixed feeling about this dish.... On one hand, it taste quite good, but, on the other, it is not quite authentic (for its name). Normally Pla Rard Phrik will be unbattered deep fried fish, with spicy & sweet chilli sauce (usually only chilli, garlic, fish sauce, tamarind juice/paste and sugar); there are slight variety but not siginifant. The restaurant served battered deep fried fish, on sauce with straw mushroom, pineapple, and sweet basil. The sauce base tastes very similar but with the scent from sweet basil. Don't get me wrong, I still think it taste good, it's just not what I expected from the name, and I also can't think of a similar dish (maybe Pla Sarm Rod which is another dish they also have). I think the fish portion is a bit too little for the price, but it's probably because it's deep fried (more process = more time = more cost). The fish is also not very crispy. I'd say try other dishes instead, but no problem if you want this one. We also have these with #806 Khao (ข้าว) or rice at HKD30 (+10%) for a large bowl (feeds 2-3). Nothing much to say on this one, just typical good rice you'd expect in restaurant. They also serve hot tea (refill) at no additional cost. I forgot to take the menu photo, but others already did it so I hope it's all good! continue reading

We dropped into Taiko for shopping today and ended up eating at this lovely restaurant opposite the mall. We ordered the tom yum to share ( small portion was just fine for two) my daughter enjoyed the chicken fried rice. Me and my wife had a steam fish to share and we ended up with a fantastic mango sticky rice at the end. The manager Mr lau was absolutely professional and accommodating we will definitely re visit soon. continue reading
