You have no idea how busy this week I am and it's not because of blogger event, but my personal schedule for those closing restaurant. And on the closing in this week list, there are two from the same dining group, The Press Room and The Pawn (actually, it is just closed temporarily for renovation). The Press Room, the casual French-European restaurant on Hollywood Road, will run till this Friday, thus I have already no chance for their weekend brunch menu, while I still have time for set lunch, which is what I'm going to say something now and here. The offered $154 for 2-course and $168 for 3-course from Monday to Friday lunch time (12nn to 3pm). Three starts, five main courses and two desserts (some needs extra payment to be selected) and an extra purchase of one glass of white/red wine. You can have your business lunch with colleagues/ clients/ family members/ friends or even alone like a king/queen in their spacial dining space, and they offers an All-day bar concept next to the entrance. I love the classic decoration and furniture in the restaurant; the fake kerosene lamp, the slightly 'smoked' paintings and especially the dark brown sofa form up a old gentleman style. For the set lunch, we were not so interested in the starts, and luckily we made the right decision of 2-course which is more than enough for a normal girl's stomach.Warm French bread, the fluffy and warm center part has a high similarity of Italian basil bread, which has a slightly wet and condensed texture, but meanwhile it has the feature of crispy and rough bread 'skin'. Dip black vinegar, or have a little butter without salt, we just finish the whole plate in one second without considering calorie, fat, those kind annoying stuff. The presentation of salad is awesome! Totally a giant volcano of greens but not as raw salad, it is slightly grilled to be stomach-friendly, nose-attractive and still healthy. I and my friend were really in those largely cut mushroom, while it seems too big to have an adverse effect on the softness and taste. My selection is more tasty by the way, and as my friend's comment, it makes her cross-think to the Chinese cuisine, because the mixture of shredded chicken with leek and the salty tasty sauce. To me, it is less impressive for the less western taste. The Parmesan is nice as looking, and the sauce has a strong cheese taste for sure, while it is just cheese but not unique in flavor. The combination of too much chicken slices and leek does give me illusion that I'm having a dish of fried rice with chicken slices in a Chinese restaurant. Both of us chose brownie for a sweet ending, and they didn't disappoint us. It is a kind of condensed and heavy expression of chocolate brownie with less flour in the processing. With a high level of sweetness, the fresh fruits and light cream as toppings are the best accompanies. In general, the set lunch doesn't impress me a lot, and compared to the multiple set lunch choices in Central and Soho area, it might be a little over-pricing upon the quality it offers. continue reading

Brunch time again with LR, but this time I didn't plan ahead which restaurant to go. Wandering around the mid-levels, I came across The Press Room and found it's only half-full. We decided to give it a try. Brunch Menu選擇不少,一般的早午餐項目如eggs benedict/florentine/royale、french toast、all day breakfast、croque monsieur/madame、omelette、數款不同的sandwiches都有。 The decoration of The Press Room is one of the classy style, one that is fit for romantic date night. Atmosphere at the Saturday afternoon is different with the soft sunshine lighting up the restaurant. The waiter politely led us to our seats and I started perusing the brunch menu. A wide variety of brunch options are available such as eggs benedict/florentine/royale, french toast, all day breakfast, croque monsieur/madame, omelette, various sandwiches etc. "Homard benedict" caught my eye, it's lobster benedict, but I wasn't prepared to pay $238 for just a brunch item...Salmon & Cod Burger ($138) - 幾乎每一檯都有人點至少一客burger,我也點了一份。 I noticed that nearly every table had ordered a burger, so LR and I followed suit. As you can see, the burger was very "tall". The lettuce at the bottom was fresh and was able to hold up the tomato and the fish fillet. Fries were placed on the side.Although the bun looked huge, it's actually filled with air. Well, by no way I mean it's not good coz the bun was good! It's toasted to perfection with a bit of a crisp. The lettuce and tomato were fresh and sweet and would have been perfect for a salad. The fish fillet was what we called "hot air", but luckily it's not oily at all. It would have been better if it had been larger (may be I am just being greedy...). The fries were okay, not much to comment on.French Toast ($89) - 其實我在waffle和french toast之間掙扎的好一會兒,兩款都想吃呀。 At first I had difficulty in deciding between waffle and french toast as I wanted both. But since I had tried the french toast at Open Kitchen in IFC before and quite like it, I decided to try the one here in The Press Room to see which one was better. And the conclusion is... the one here was also quite good. Another thing is I never really know why french toast, being a sweet item, is matched with bacon, a savory item. Probably gonna google it some time later. Back to the toast, it's nicely done with a golden colour on the outside. It absorbed the maple syrup without being too soggy or too sweet. The only downside was that there was only one toast, since it's a $85 dish, having two toast would have been much more appropriate. Tea after the food was definitely a must and here the tea came with a teapot. But the tea bag was just a common brand, not much to expect here. Setting aside the tea, I quite like the food here with the great atmosphere, though the price was not cheap. Having said this, I would definitely say The Press Room is a nice place to hang out with friends, looking forward to visiting again! continue reading

continue reading

It is my girlfriend's treat and she let me pick one of the 2 restaurants she chose.  I ended up picking this place. We had reservation at 8pm and got there on time.  The server took us to a table with half couch.  The tables are quite close to each so we could clearly hear what people said next table. We first ordered some drinks.  I had a bottled beer and my girlfriend had a Margarita.  The focus of the menu was the chef special.  They also offered burgers, steak, pasta and other seafood items but we just ordered from the chef's special. The place was fairly dark to a point I think it was overdone.  I could barely see some of the ingredients in my plate. They served the bread right after we ordered drinks.  The bread was fairly good with butter. We ordered 2 green salads to start and for main courses, we had seafood languini and whole seabass. My girlfriend had the seabass.  The fish was very fresh and juicy.  For people don't like the fish taste, you should not order this.  Other than some herbs and salt, there was nothing extra added to the fish.  It is all about tasting the original fish taste.I had the seafood languini.  The seafood came with prawn (1), scallop (1), pan fried seabass (1), mussel (6-7).  The scallop was really fresh but there was only one piece.  For the other seafood, it was average.  One of the mussels went bad and ruined my overall comment on this dish.  Nothing was special about the sauce.  The languini was overcooked and too soft.  Overall service was average.  We had to ask twice to order and twice to get the check.   continue reading
