Have been going to this restaurant in the last three years, friendly staff and awesome chef - Jen, who made this place truly outstanding.Chris, the owner, hailed from England knows his beer, and always will to recommend. The couple is the most popular peeps on the Lantau island.love to see them grow since opening its door and I will come back often for the next 30 years or so. continue reading

Genuine staff and owner. Place has major village vibe to it. Occasionally they local band performances and quiz nights. Originally I got attracted by their own brew, and I was surprised by how weirdly amazing it was. It was my first time trying beer without the heavy carbonation, according to the owner the beer is still in experimentation and they are still fine-tuning it yet it already tasted pretty amazing for a craft beer. I always bring my friends there and usually what surprised them the most was how oddly it feels like an old British pub yet fused with a completely different local village laid-back vibe. Their selections of hand bump alcohol, e.g. Spitfire, Gwailo beer, are all highly recommended as the home-brew beer are not always available. Food selections are wide, from kiddy dishes, steaks to your everyday pies. They also do a very good job catering the vegetarians and vegans. My girlfriend would certainly say that their vegetarian burger with chips are the best thing out of this place. What feels the most homie at this place are the people. Often you will see the owners’ offsprings in the restaurant and regular locals. The owner always bring up his best smile and is genuinely kind to cater different people’s needs. Despite prices being slightly higher, everything was done decently. Love this place and certainly will return to it. continue reading

We happened to be staying on Lantau for the weekend so I was intrigued by the thought of a Sunday carvery. We are brits and really miss this Sunday staple. We booked to make sure and was told it was a three course buffet with 3 meats for $248. Sounded a good deal although slightly on the pricy side. Lunch is supposed to be 12.30-2.30 but we phoned to say we would be late. We arrived just after 1pm but the carvery hadn’t yet started. Good job we missed the earlier ferry else we would be hanging around waiting for food. So we ordered a couple of expensive draft ales (prices are island prices) and waited for food. Carvery then opened and basically they put all the food out on trays in the bar. It felt a bit like going to someone’s house or a 21st birthday buffet. Note there was no mention whatsoever of the starter. We weren’t offered one and actually forgot about it until we had started the main course. No idea what it was as the menu didn’t mention the carvery. The meat joints came out and one of the locals did the carving in between drinking (seriously). All the food was absolutely amazing. The beef was just out of this world. Lamb leg was nicely flavoured and there was stunning crispy pork. We had to wait for gravy (as I said service was shambolic throughout) but when it came again it was super tasty. We weren’t rushed nor was there any limit on how much meat we wanted. Place was quiet and there was only one more family present. Dessert was apple crumble which we passed on. Wife because she was full. Me because I don’t like apple. Despite not being offered a starter and not having a dessert (so basically one course for $248) we had a really interesting, quirky, puzzling at times experience. Ultimately eating is about the food and on that note it couldn’t be faulted. It was certainly memorable due to the keystone cops style service but we just took that in our stride. Maybe the place gets packed out sometimes I don’t know. We would go back again but this time ensure we get our starter and perhaps a bit more demanding in terms of service. continue reading

I popped into the Water Buffalo very late on a Sunday night with zero expectations. I ordered the Roast Beef and had a Spitfire ale to accompany it.When asking for recommendations and being told the Roast Beef was succulent I was very sceptical, however ordered as recommended. Being British and having had numerous pub roasts my experience was they are invariably dry and tough and a disappointment.I was very wrong the beef was as advertised, thick juicy cuts of succulent tasty roast beef. The Spitfire ale was a great pint and I thoroughly recommend it.Finally I rounded off with apple pie and custard. It was great, perfect balance of crumble and apple, not too sweet and a smooth creamy custard.I am a very picky person when it comes to restaurants and my expectations of them.I also never write reviews but I have to say I was exceedingly impressed with my experience at Water Buffalo and will return. A great little addition to the South Lantau scene and so far the best I've had, and I've been to most of them, none of which warranted a review. continue reading
