We happened to be staying on Lantau for the weekend so I was intrigued by the thought of a Sunday carvery. We are brits and really miss this Sunday staple.

We booked to make sure and was told it was a three course buffet with 3 meats for $248. Sounded a good deal although slightly on the pricy side.

Lunch is supposed to be 12.30-2.30 but we phoned to say we would be late. We arrived just after 1pm but the carvery hadn’t yet started. Good job we missed the earlier ferry else we would be hanging around waiting for food.

So we ordered a couple of expensive draft ales (prices are island prices) and waited for food.

Carvery then opened and basically they put all the food out on trays in the bar. It felt a bit like going to someone’s house or a 21st birthday buffet.

Note there was no mention whatsoever of the starter. We weren’t offered one and actually forgot about it until we had started the main course. No idea what it was as the menu didn’t mention the carvery.

The meat joints came out and one of the locals did the carving in between drinking (seriously). All the food was absolutely amazing. The beef was just out of this world. Lamb leg was nicely flavoured and there was stunning crispy pork.

We had to wait for gravy (as I said service was shambolic throughout) but when it came again it was super tasty.

We weren’t rushed nor was there any limit on how much meat we wanted. Place was quiet and there was only one more family present.

Dessert was apple crumble which we passed on. Wife because she was full. Me because I don’t like apple.

Despite not being offered a starter and not having a dessert (so basically one course for $248) we had a really interesting, quirky, puzzling at times experience.

Ultimately eating is about the food and on that note it couldn’t be faulted. It was certainly memorable due to the keystone cops style service but we just took that in our stride.

Maybe the place gets packed out sometimes I don’t know. We would go back again but this time ensure we get our starter and perhaps a bit more demanding in terms of service.
