I’ve passed by this shop many times and every time there were people inside so I finally decided to try today and see if it is that good. They serve traditional Yunnan mixian with a plethora of toppings and side dishes, most of which are spicy but as someone that cannot eat spice (not recommended by Chinese doctor 😂), I opted for the least spicy dishes.

I got the dish that best sums up Yunnan mixian: the mixian in pot but removed the spice and added a few toppings because the noodles itself is very affordable!


Noodles reminded me of TamJai due to it being the same width (thin) and slippery with minimal chew/bite. The soup is different though due to the addition of sour rutabaga which gave it a very pleasant acidity and sweetness. I imagine it would have been more flavourful with spice but it is fine without.


As for the toppings, this option comes with bean sprouts and chives along with the sour rutabaga. Everything added a very nice crunch and was given very generously so every mouthful of mixian had some crunch element to it.


I also added some tofu skin and choy sum and both were given abundantly. Tofu skin is very thick silky and chewy, another great textural contrast to the soft mixian. The choy sum cooked very well with the stem and leaves being tender and sweet. Halfway through eating, I saw a waitress wrap dumplings in the middle of the shop so perhaps next time can try their homemade pork dumplings as well.


The portion is not as large as it looked and I saw the table next to me with two mainland girls did not finish their bowls which was a shame as they could have just asked for less.


The restaurant’s environment definitely needs improvement. The female bathroom was under maintenance the day I came which was very unfortunate as I was quite desperate to go. They charge for tissue paper which is not ideal as the chopsticks and table are quite dirty. There were also a few bugs and flies that interrupted my meal so that was unappetising.

💬 Overall, the food isn’t bad but nothing special and I prefer 天星 right down the street because their mixian is thicker and bouncier and their pork bone soup is also more addictive. The environment also prevents me from wanting to come back. The only upside is the price which is very reasonable and justifies why they still have regular guests.
