The last time I was here was more than 15 years ago! We asked the manager and was told that this shop had been opened in the same location for 19 years already. They dug out a basement and built two extra levels since I last came (digging and filling in basements is a very popular pasttime amongst Hong Kong politians nowadays. )
The restaurant had plenty of sofa seats and those were very spacious and comfortable. ( A little bit similar to those at "Sorobol"). I was told that they had a lot of VIP rooms at different levels too. Should be perfectly suited for big groups.
The menu had many different types of hotpots, some of those had a Japanese theme to it. Not exactly just shabu shabu, which is similar to the Beijing style lamb hotpot where you dip the thin piece of meat into boiling water and then dip into ponzu or sesame paste, but the soups provided here are more similar to Cantonese style hotpot and had a lot more variety, including tomato soup base, fish soup, Korean chilli soup base, and Sichuan chilli soup if I remember correctly, which is a plesant surprise. (Shabu shabu is not very exciting really.)
We ordered "Chango nabe": HK$320 for two persons.
Complimentary appetizer: First came the appetizers. Those were chili marinated bean sprouts. Quite good.
I was quite surprised to see a dish of dark soy sauce placed in front of us. As I was wondering what that dark sauce might be, we were served with a big plate of spring onions, chili and garlic! Definitely Hong Kong style hotpot, which I appreciate even more than the traditional shabu shabu sesame sauce plus ponzu. I didn't mind that at all.
The broth arrived first: 1/2 Fish soup and 1/2 Korean spicy soup. The Korean chilli soup was similar to the soup pack of a "Shin Ramyun" (the spicy Korean instant noodle). This was just so so.
On the other hand, the Fish soup was extremely sweet and tasty! Not "fishy" at all. This is recommended.
The beef and pork were also part of the chango nabe.
Beef: not sure what beef it was my wife though it was quite good.
Pork: Probably from Kagoshima. It was OK too. The meat taste wasn't particularly strong but not bad. It had a good balance between lean meat and fat. I was quite happy with it. Then came the seafood platter, which consisted of:
- Chinese cabbage: a lot of cabbage - all very fresh .
- Tofu: at least 10 piece of tofu. Quite smooth. Good.
- Abalone: x2 - super fresh - it' still alive
- Green Mussles: x 2 - also super fresh;
- Scallop x2 : also very fresh - this had quite a lot of scallop taste!
- Naruto Maki (鳴門卷): x 4 slices - chewy and sweeter than normal - nice!
- Chikuwa (竹輪 - 或稱"獅子狗卷" - 忍者小靈精一人物愛吃): x 2 tubes - quite good - above average.
- Tomato: Big, probably from Japan and definitely organic - big and tasty.
- Enoki: small bunch - fresh but ...well, just a small bunch.
Fresh seafood: What was noteworthy was that the seafood was very, very fresh! The abalones were still alive and kicking (well, maybe not kicking, but it was alive). Prawns, mussells and scallops as well.
So, definitely top points for freshness (if a bit scary) and very good value for the quality provided!
Seafood is definitely recommended! The squid paste was also part of the chango nabe set. Those were very smooth and fresh. It had very good squid taste. It didn't look a lot but was surprisingly filling. So definitely enough for two persons with average appetite! I'd say it's prety good value!
However, I couldn't help but ordered fried fish skin. It's HK$38 for not a very big plate. Luckily the quality was good. The fish skins were very crispy and fresh. Complimentary ice cream: All in all:
Environment: Pretty quite, spacious and comfy.
Service: Very polite and helpful.
Food: Very good quality and fresh seafood!
Filling meal set which also included pork, beef and squid paste. Great value for what you're getting!
Excellent for even just two persons. VIP rooms also available.
We sat there for more than 2 hours enjoying our chango nabe and bottled Kirin.
Recommended.
Other Info. :
Chango Nabe: "ちゃんこ鍋“ (Chango nabe - 相撲手鍋) is typically a sumo wrestler's main meal. We've tried a chango nabe at 両国 Ryogoku, Japan, the HQ of Japanese sumo. We had the chango nabe after we saw a real sumo tournament last year. The sumo tournament was extremely interesting! There is a surprising amount of technique in sumo and the sumo wrestlers were surprisingly fast in spite of their size! Most matches were over in less than 30 seconds! Anyway, the chango nabe there had a lot more chicken meat, which helps maintain body mass, and leek, instead of seafood.
Shabu Shabu: Those provided at "616" (TST) is more authentic. In fact, these were not shabu shabu in the traditionally sense as they didn't have sesame sauce and ponzu. Notwithstanding it not being authentic "shabu shabu", this is still a very good place to have hotpot style meal for two persons. The ingredients were very fresh, the seats were comfortable and there were many sets for one or two persons. Worth a try!
