It was pretty crowded at the time but we were lucky to get a table near the entrance.
Decor:
The place was nicely designed, modern and chic. However, there weren't too many seats and it was a bit cramped. They had about 3-4 tables for four persons 4-5 counter seats in front of the bar and a "patio-like" area with bar stools for another 4 facing outside.
The menu was comprehensive. Similar to Nantei. Chicken, Pork, Lamb, Vegetables, quite a number of beef. Prices were reasonable. Ranged betwee HK$13 - $50 I believe it was in Chinese, Japanese and English (?)
First things first, I ordered a draft Sapporo beer ($50) and a plate of edamame to go with it. ($28) Decent portion and broiled in salted water.
The friendly waitress gave the appetizers to us (HK$15 each) It was a small piece of goma tofu. The tofu was smooth. Good start. These were what we've ordered:
Pork with siso : This was good. The pork had pork taste. Timing was good and the siso added a tangy taste to it. (HK$25)
Pork with asparagus: Again, the pork had good taste and the asparagus was fresh. (HK$28)
Buta bara (Gilled pork belly): Nice and juicy. Propery grilled. Aromatic. (HK$35)
Chicken skin: Some like it dry (Nishiki, Jun) and but some like it fatty and chewy (Nantei). I like both. It's the latter style here. It's grill with some nice sauce, which is most likely home-made. (HK$18)
Chicken kidney: Surprisingly good. It's very hard to find places that do good sunagimo (chicken kidney). Jun's is very consistent and even a bit better than Nishiki. (HK$22)
Garlic: Big, aromatic and good timing. (HK$13)
Shishito (Green pepper): To clear internal heat. No complaints. ($18)
Chicken liver (I think!?) : ($27) Good quality liver and well prepared. Properly cleaned without a shred of irony taste. Good.
Right:
Negima - Chicken grilled with meat: ($28) Very juicy chicken meat grilled with the special home made sauce. The leek was just average quality though and overgrilled. Anyway, it was good.
Sochu with HOT water: I finally tried it. I can't remember which sochu I had (HK$42). the effect was quite interesting but perhaps it was the wrong sochu to add hot water. It felt very much like a hot winter drink. It's a bit like drinking warm vodka. With a slice of lemon and some honey, it might be a good anti-flu drink!?
I noticed that whenever customers ordered wine, the waitress would shuttle out of the shop and then return shortly afterwards, which I found a bit dodgey. But later the friendly waitress told me that this place was part of the Bricklane group and she got the wine from Bricklane.
By the way, the service in this shop is good. Very polite to customers and served with a smile.
We were quite happy with what we've had so far so we decided to go for more:
Grilled Okura: ($15) Fresh and tasty. It's an acquired taste though. Not everyone likes the gooey centre of okura.
Chicken wings (HK$25): Never underestimate the skill involved in grilling a chicken wing. For me, it's almost the acid test of a yakitori shop or any BBQ shop. If they can't do this well, I can't trust whatever else they might do. Takagi passed the test with flying colours. The chick wings were nicely marinated. The salt was just right (for me) and the timing was good. Crispy outside and juicy inside. Well done!
The neighbourhood might be a bit intimidating for some but definitely worth a visit.
