I guess I had high hopes when I entered ‘Ruby Tuesday’ in City Plaza. The American-Western chain was un-extraordinary and lacked imagination. The only saving grace was the welcoming interior. I guess I had high hopes when I entered ‘Ruby Tuesday’ in City Plaza. The American-Western chain was un-extraordinary and lacked imagination. The only saving grace was the welcoming interior. As I went with family, we had ordered 4 meals separately but decided to share. The menu consisted of mainly American cuisine, there were a selection of salads (and a mini salad bar!), “shareables” (appetizers), seafood, fajitas, pasta, ribs, quesadillas, burgers, steaks, and desserts of several variations. We decided on Chicken Breast Fajitas, Teriyaki Sesame Chicken, Mac and Cheese from the Kids’ Menu and Santa Fe Chicken Quesadillas – for me. The meals were all of good proportions however did not advertise anything extraordinary or new. I primarily ate the Santa Fe Chicken Quesadilla and unfortunately, there seemed to be no fresh ingredients, the cheese was overwhelming and overpowered all other flavours including the spicy flavour that was described on the menu, which was masked away. I felt as though I was eating mac and cheese dressed as a quesadilla. I was content with the Teriyaki Chicken however my mum was not so happy. The menu promised that it would be grilled however it was dripping with oil – obviously deep fried. She had also requested a side of grilled vegetables but what she got was a plate of French fries and two florets of broccoli. The only grace to a mediocre meal was the smiling faces of the chatty waitresses and staff. Unfortunately they overdid it by hovering around us and asking us about the food too many times. I think that there is a limit to the amount of times someone can fake a smile through mouthfuls of food to say that the food is great. Putting that aside, I was delighted with the kids’ menu which also served as an activity sheet. My sister was delighted with both the food and the sheet/menu, but then again, I guess you can’t go wrong with mac & cheese.
I was shocked at the price we had to pay for this meal. There are several similar chain restaurants in Hong Kong where the cost is much lower for a similar meal!
By the end of it, we were so full of cheese, we decided to opt out of dessert.
Overall, although holding a general lack of appeal, the welcoming staff and soothing ambience made the experience more was relaxing and enjoyable, but sadly this was not a value for money. The mere thought of the overflowing cheese and stale vegetables makes me sick to the stomach.
Ambience - check. Food … – If I wanted a burger joint there are many options in Hong Kong, at lower prices too.
