It has been a while we could have a larger gathering of people for dinner. So, we decided to have Chinese food. Not wanting to go to the usual more well known restaurants, we searched and found this place called 紫醉軒 (English name: Violet Chinese Bar and Restaurant). We had not heard of it it before but reviews seemed positive so we gave it a try.It wasn't what we expected when we arrived. Instead of the usual Chinese style decor, this one was more like a bar. This is the Black Sesame Deep Fried Tofu ($88). Not only pretty to look at but these were really good. They looked like black bricks. The coating was a nutty shell that was super crispy but not too thick. The tofu was still soft and silky. The Milky Golden Prawn ($158) were a generous serving. The prawn was fresh and plump. The coating had a slight salty egg taste but not too much as it was a bit more creamier in taste. The crumbs were still crisp and definitely good with the drinks we ordered. The next item we shared was a Hakka Beef Pot ($128). I believe it should be pork but the English said beef so it might be a translation issue. But this was a nicer upgrade from the usual Hakka pork belly and preserved vegetable dish we are all accustomed to. The meat was braised so long, it literally melted in your mouth. It was packed with flavour. There was bits of preserved vegetables that gave it a salty umami taste to everything. Dried Mandarin Fish Udon ($108) was a light end to our meal. The udon was firm and chewy. There were lots of slices of fish meat that was firm and fresh along with a lot of bok choy. The soup was packed with flavour.
The food was very good and we loved it was quiet so we could sit and talk easily. Prices not too expensive. A wonderful hidden eatery.
