It was my first time to Ciao Chow although I know this restaurant for long. It situates at one of the best location at Lan Kwai Fong with open sitting area facing the junction of Dundas Street and Lan Kwai Fong. Theoretically, customers sitting near the entrance has the best spot to the Halloween crowd but you better give up the hope. There were too many people standing along the street and block your view. Therefore, we decided to sit near the open kitchen at the back of the restaurant instead.

“Ciao Chow” is an Italian word which means ”Hello! Eat!” in English. It is a causal open kitchen Italian cafeteria with bar, 2 open kitchens and pizza stove. Long table setting fosters a convivial atmosphere where food is shared amongst family and friends.

The fellow working at the stove was so camera welcome.

The restaurant is running with a strong beliefs on quality. They serve only “Demominazione di Origine Controllata” (DOC) products from Italy. It is an EU government protection of quality and authentic agricultural foodstaffs designations. They are also the first pizzeria to be certified by the Associazione Vera Pizza Napoletana (AVPN) in Hong Kong.

For a Halloween evening, we have such a big appetite that we ordered at least one dish on different categories.

Our first course was Gorgonzola Piemontese. It is Piemontese white cheese layered with Mascarpone. Cheese offered here are all from Italy and produced in traditional method. As said, they are all DOC product. So, customers have no worry on harmful ingredients. It came with pita bread and bread sticks.

Texture of the cheese was very soft and elastic. Aroma was mild. Well balance of taste, not salty but rich. It could be easily spread on bread. I like it a lot!

The pita bread was also great. 2 pieces were served, pocket like, with bubble and burned mark on surface. They were soft, chewy and aroma of grilled food.

Zuppa e Insalate

We ordered 2 salads; Fungi and Panzanella.

Simple but delicious were the best words for it. Unique taste of salad rocket was enlightened by Parmigiano Reggiano and the appetite enlightening vinegar dressing. I never know Chinese brown mushroom could be a good ingredients of salad until today. It was surprising go well with vinegar dressing. It was healthy to started a big meal with abundant fresh vegetable.

We both liked this salad more than the other one.

Our second salad has rich content including cherry tomato, cucumber, red onion, capers, olives, basil and grilled garlic bread. This was simply seasoned by extra-virgin olive oil. I did not like raw onion too much as it used to be strong and I felt like my tongue was burned. Luckily this was easily diluted by cherry tomato.

I liked the idea of having crunchy garlic bread in the salad as it brought in additional texture.

Authentic was an attractive word and was irresistible as we were sitting just opposite to the open kitchen. Our choice is Margherita.  Simple topping with mainly San Marzano tomato and 2 kinds of cheese; Mozzarella and Parmigiano Reggiano; seasoned by basil and extra-virgin olive oil.

However, it was not a right choice as I found it too sour for me. Although it came from natural tomato but too plain possibly due to lack of meat on the pizza. Cheese was juicy, sticky and yummy.

We like thin crust but this one was not crispy.  Though, roll-over a pizza was also a way of eating it. It was possibly authentic style but I was used to modern one with plenty of topping and crispy base.

Seafood pasta in tomato sauce was nothing new. It used to be fundamental but super. A delightful surprise was the bead-like tiny pasta. I believe they were Acini di pepe or Peppercorns in English. Shellfish were fresh and fat. There was nothing to complaint with, simply delicious.

Tiramisu is a popular coffee favored Italian cheesecake. This devil attraction is never disappointing although each restaurant has her own recipe. The one we have today has more moisture, cheesy and abundant egg yolks.

Our dinner ended with a positive note nonetheless, as the herbal tea were most surprising. A semi-transparent  triangular tea bag and a cup of hot water was provided. I could see thought fresh leaves and ingredients and they tasted the same. It was so enlightening with natural lemon grass and ginger fragrance. I immediately took a picture of the tea bag as it could be ordered on-line, highly recommended.

My dinning partner ended his with a coffee.

As a round-up, we have unbeaten cheese, great salad and delicious pasta tonight. Unfortunately, pizza was not as good as expected. Overall rating on taste is 3.5/5. Excellent atmosphere, great service and reasonable price added value. We shall be back.
