Have never tried The Sports Club for dinner despite having frequented this restaurant for lunch on numerous occasions. Those lunches have been rather satisfying - good food and reasonable prices but this impression took a beating last night.

Wanted to entertain a friend and had no preconceived budget as to how much and what to order.

As soon as we sat down, we were recommended to try some of their specials - one was fish 生炒魚球 and the other one was asparagus with crab claws. I decided to go for the crab claws 鮮蘆筍炒蟹蚶 as it sounded very unusual and worth trying. The other dishes were the daily soup 例湯 and a spare-ribs in Maggi sauce 美極排骨.

The soup came first - tasty, full of goodies. A very nice way to start off the dinner. No complaints there.

Then came the asparagus and crab claws. There must have been at least ten, or possibly more, claws there and they were very fresh, not those frozen ones from Japan and the asparagus was nice and tender and not chewy. A little too oily to my liking but nonetheless a good dish.

The spare-ribs in Maggi sauce was a bit of a disappointment. Couldn't really taste any sign of Maggi sauce and the spare-ribs were rather bland and over-tenderised (no taste of pork at all).

We finished off with a sweet almond dessert 蛋白杏仁茶 which was very nicely made.

The surprise came with the bill. It was over $700! Considering the prices of the soup, the spare-ribs, two bowls of rice and one dessert, the other one was really expensive. A mistake on my part in not having asked for what 時價 really meant before ordering and not wanting to spoil the otherwise pleasant evening, I decided to let the issue go.

The previous lunches have all averaged at about $100 per person, this dinner really caught me by surprise both the price and the variation in quality between dishes.
