A cake from Uriwari has long been a birthday wish. The absence of an easily accessible retail location and charged MTR delivery only add to the anticipation and expectation. So I “delegate” the ordering procedure to hubby and wait for my birthday wish to come true. Chocolate and raspberry are not to my liking so we choose Nagomi, which includes mainly Japanese sugary mousse, green tea mousse with dark sugar syrup.

The cake came in an understated paper box without any logo, but I’d say it’s packed thoughtfully with dry ice pack, together with plastic forks, a long stick candle and a small glass jar of dark sugar syrup to go with the gelatin cubes on the cake top. Nagomi, as the Chinese description on their web page goes, means harmony. The cake achieves much more than that though. A layer of fluffy sugary mousse made from premium sugar from Tokushima Prefecture with gelatin cubes and dots of silver on top houses a multi-layer sensation including green tea almond cake, green tea mousse and brown sugar jelly. The green tea tastes weaker than those of green tea dessert in Japan but adds to the overall not-too-sweet harmony, while the almond cake adds some nutty texture. The dark sugar syrup is kind of thin though, which may soak the cake if adding too much. The sugary mousse is smooth with a light pure taste, a nice contrast from more common milky cream. While we seldom take sugar so seriously, the pure taste means the ingredient is of good quality.

The price is not cheap but I believe it goes much into the special ingredients and thoughtful combination of flavours, rather than high shop rent and staff cost in ubiquitous cake shops. Certainly worth recommending and hope Uriwari keeps on thriving for the sweet tooth in ladies.
