Yesterday, I had a date with my friend for celebrating our birthdays at Lady M, Causeway Bay, yet unexpectedly, that was a rainy evening. There was traffic jam and our shoes were all wet, which turned out to be a messy start for the celebration. Nevertheless, it was a surprisingly nice dinning occasion that I wish to share with you because of their exceptional CREPES, CAKES, DRINKS and even FOOD!! Before getting a consensus of where to go or what to eat, we've come up with some criteria for yesterday's pick:
1) Tasty cakes available;
2) Apart from food, there are light meals available that is good enough to feed a young gentleman!
3) Convenient location

As a matter of fact, it was easy to just find a place for light meals or cakes (either one), but not both two at once. After some research, we found that the shop was a famous patisserie founded in New York since 2008. Because of its delicate and innovative rendering of French crepes, Lady M received an award from the seminal food magazine 'BON APPETITE'--'Ten of the Best Cake in America'.

As such, we decided to make our visit to Lady M, since the shop was well renowned of the varieties and taste of their Million Crepes. Also, it only took only 5 minute walk from the MTR and Bus station (bus coming from The Cross Harbour Tunnel) to the Fashion Walk. After deciding to go, we eventually met at the Front Door outside Lady M at 19:00, which was a bit early for dinner and no one was queuing up. A big thank you to the rain that we did not  need to wait because there were always people lining up outside during afternoon and dinner service. There were about 8-10 customers enjoying their food inside, so we saw almost equivalent number of umbrellas on the umbrella shelf outside. Glad that there were two shelves that we did not have to place our umbrella down on the floor or bring inside. A seemingly minor thing, however, made us believe that we made a smart choice suitable for a rainy evening

The environment was quite cozy inside with simple cloud white as the theme of the restaurants, applying on walls, ceilings, floor, lights, tables, plates, etc.. The white marble tables were most impressive design among all, which looked clean and elegant. (feel so high-class!) With nice environment, we took time to read the menu slowly.

There were two pages for light meals in a separate menu, including 5 appetizers (vegetarian options included) and some slightly heavier options, like New York Avocado Bagel ($98), Roasted Portobello ($108), Warm Quinoa Salad ($108), Pastas($108)  and Ravioli ($108). Personally, I think the price was not so expensive, comparing to other middle-class restaurants at Causeway Bay.

Without much worrying to the price, guess what, our pick was Wild Morel Risotto ($138)! Morel was the name of the mushroom with a very distinctive wax-like cap which formed a small empty bag, typically for stuffing mousse or other ingredients in cooking. It was considered an alternative luxury (expensive) to black truffle for its unique fungi flavour without the kind of artificialness as some cheap truffle renders. After the main was picked, we then moved to the important bit: the dessert!

There were four kind of crepes offered by Lady M, including Rose, Original, Earl Grey and Green tea. Although Rose flavour is exclusive to HK store, we heard some negative review of it--an artificial taste, so we opt for earl grey and signature original flavour to contrast out the two together. Also, there were a number of cakes available, including chocolates, strawberry spongecake, banana mille feuille (pastry), napoleon, etc.. As cake lovers, we were appealed to their varieties/cake collections! Looking at the display, we already had a clearer sense of the portion and taste, as shown there. Well, it was not an easy decision to pick 2 main, 2 desserts... We want More Cakes

Glad that the restaurant offered a Cake set for 2 ppl, ($298),  including 4 pieces of cakes and 2 drinks on the menu! From a customer perspective, it seems way cheaper to try the cakes here!! So, we ordered one cake set, plus the Morel risotto.

Unexpectedly, the Morel Risotto ($138) was accompanied with soup and an amuse bouche (snack before the meal)! There were small cup of squash soup and one-bite-size vegetarian crab cake.  The petite presentation makes us feel we're doing fine dining here, perfectly for celebrations! The soup tastes mild hinted with touch of sweetness of the squash, refreshing! Recommended: 4/5

On the other hand, the VG crab cake was surprisingly good. We did not feel like eating something not crabby! What a magic played by the chef!! We can still bite the shredded texture, very similar to crab meat, and with the paprika seasoning, this appetizer was giving both excitement on the rendering of texture and spicy taste. If we've not looked at the menu, we'd probably not notice this was not crab per se. Recommended: 5/5

As a matter of fact, the four cakes arrived at the same time, so we took a picture of them together! Serving on a long rectangle stand, the presentation was simple, but gave an impression of luxurious because of the plate design. Also, our drinks: ginger lemongrass tea and French peach juice arrived. Drink first, then the cakes.

The Peach juice was very very thick, as you'd notice on the bottle that the 'puree' sticks on the neck of the bottle. Pouring it into the glass with some ice, the cooling effect gives the fragrant peach juice an extra click: the cooler the drink, the sensual activation of sweetness increases. It tasted indeed very peachy, sweet without any sourness! Very cold-pressed sounded! Recommended: 5/5

Then, the Morel risotto ($138) arrived not long we finished half of the drink, so we decided to finish the rice first, before trying the cake. There was an onsen egg (70C soft-poached egg) in the center of the plate! With parsley sprinkled around the plate, this somehow echoed with the theme--flower of the design of the food here. Lightly browned, the rice tasted rich flavour of the morel mushroom as enhanced with the chicken stock and Parmesan cheese.

As we mixed the egg together, the savory tone was pinned down by the sweetness of the silky egg. The onsen enhanced the texture of the risotto by adding richness from the egg and lightness from the white. What I liked this dish most was the absence of cream here: authentically, the chef used only butter and cheese, in addition to egg yolk to thicken the dish (including stirring as well). Unlike many recipes of the cafe which used cream quite often, I enjoyed the lightness of risotto of Lady  M's. Highly recommended! Almost forgot they gave us a big piece of morel mushroom
Recommended: 5/5!

After refreshing our mouth with the mint-infused water, we began to taste the cake (from the lightest to the richest).

The original crepe cake was beautifully layered: the layering was very clear: you can see how the crepes were layered with the vanilla pastry cream. In addition, the crepes and cream were thinly layered, which gave us a very soft, delicate texture on the tongue: just melted, vanished ! It's my first time trying such a thinly fried crepes and layered crepe cake! Wonderful! Furthermore, I was amazed by the genius caramelized topping! There was a very thin layer of sugar, and slightly 'burnt' with the torch. The touch of bitter-sweet flavour as distincted from the vanilla cream gave a complex finish of the cake! Recommended: 5/5

Then, we tasted the Mille Feuille. There was a total of five layers: pastry, pastry cream + strawberries, pastry pastry cream + soaked cake + pastry. Beautifully layered, and the layered difference between berries and cake gave a different texture and taste, too. One was sweet and sour, much refreshing, while the other was more sweet and the soaked cake gave the liqeuer kind of taste, which was complex in taste. However, the pastry was bit dried and not crunchy enough, which made me slightly disappointed. Recommended: 3/5

The third cake we tried was the Earl Grey Mille Crepes. Except the layering (slightly cracked), this piece of cake was nevertheless the prettiest among four, to my eye. The topping was a thin layer of Earl Grey Jelly/Glaze, decorated with dried flower and tea power. A very clean but beautiful presentation
T
he taste was spectacular, too. There were different degree of tea intensity between the layered cream and topping (the latter was richer in the taste of tea, while the former was more creamy). All together, the scent of tea gave us an aromatic tea fragrance and finish. Another must-try here. Recommended: 5/5

Finally, we tried the Chocolate cake:  one layer of chocolate cake, two layers of chocolate mousse, topped with ganache (chocolate glaze) and cocoa powder. Five layers, together, presented cocoa in an interesting manner. The soft mousse with dark chocolate gave both richness of cocoa, the milk chocolate brought some sweetness of the milk to the cake, while the other layering were more bitter in taste to contrast the flavour. As chocolate lover, one would certainly satisfy by tasting this piece to feel the different tonalities of cocoa. Also, this cake was actually not so heavy after all, if compared this with the Napoleon. Recommended: 5/5

All in all, the food of Lady M was quite exceptional, not only their signature cakes, but also their savory items. The service was good too: the waitress kept refilling water for us with a gentle face
This made us a truly wonderful evening and nice birthday celebration. For the price, I think they set the cakes and light meals in a reasonable price, and more importantly, they mostly tasted good (except the Napoleon). I will definitely recommend this place to my friends! To be reminded that only Lady M (Causeway Bay) offers light meals!! Don't go the wrong shop!
