This place has the best banh mi in HK, and even beats the ones I've had back home on the east coast of the US (which doesn't compare to west coast but still).The shop is just a storefront counter really + 1 tiny table for 2 they managed to squeeze at the entrance. BF and I ordered a small grilled pork sandwich and a small vegetarian meat sandwich, respectively ($36 each).
The 2 ladies at the stand knew minimal English but we communicated well enough with them AND they were very nice--a pleasant surprise in HK.
The sandwiches were in just a few minutes. First off, GREAT bread. The baguette they used was fresh and warm and suuuuper crispy, flaking off with every bite. I could eat just the baguette and be happy. The ingredients inside include carrots, cilantro (optional), and spice (optional), plus some sort of sauce (patr?) that's rich in flavor and brings the whole sandwich together. I loved the spice, which is a dry pepper that isn't very spicy but gives a kick. I'm vegetarian so I was grateful for a veg meat option. I've never had vegetarian meat before, but I found it to be savory and enjoyable.
All in all, so worth the $36. The small was filling enough for lunch but I kind of wish I got the giant large size because it was so yummy!
