If you don’t like donuts, come try these Tai O ‘donuts’ in Tai O. 沙翁 has roots in Southern China but influences neighbouring countries from Japan to Hawaii.

This ball of flour, sugar, and eggs is deep fried to give a donut-like texture and taste although the one here is much more light and airy. Love the crunchy sugar coating that gives it sweetness (dough is not too sweet, more egg-heavy) and amazing textural contrast. It’s best to eat them whilst fresh and hot so I recommend being nice to the manager and asking for a fresh batch.

If you are travelling in a group, don’t think about sharing one, get one each. You won’t regret it.

To get to Tai O, arrive at Tung Chung MTR station exit B and take bus 11 to the final stop of Tai O. Then head right to civilisation and you will eventually end up here.

A must try in Tai O and great break from the other Hong Kong islands.
