It was my Chinese birthday last week, and I have a tradition of having noodles on my birthday.  I was browsing OpenRice last week and saw a new listing in Shau Kei Wan where the restaurant name is Lo Hei, which means mixing up good fortune, and thought that it would be an excellent eatery for my birthday noodles.  Since Lo Hei is a new restaurant, I asked godbro XO to join me because he likes to review new restaurants! The decor of Lo Hei is pretty simple, so it fits in just right in the foodie n

The decor of Lo Hei is pretty simple, so it fits in just right in the foodie neighborhood of Shau Kei Wan!

After looking through the menu, XO decided to order the black truffle sauce lo mein and added on the abalone special for $28, and I decided to order the House Specialty Set and the beef tenderloin appetizer.  The House Specialty Set seemed like a really good deal as the set included a soup, an appetizer, a lo mein, and a vegetable dish for $148!

Pan-fried Diced Beef Tenderloin with Mustard & Honey Sauce: The mustard and honey sauce was nice and tangy, which got my appetite going for the meal!  My personal preference for the doneness of steak is medium rare, and since this beef tenderloin was cooked Chinese style, it was well done.  The beef was still tender, but I would have liked it more if it was medium rare.

Fried Pork Jowl in Thai Style: I was a little hesitant when I chose the pork jowl for my appetizer from the set as I don't eat a lot of pork, but given a choice between pork and numbing spiciness (the other appetizer option), I chose pork.  The pork jowl was quite tender and tasted like bacon without the smokiness.  Yay bacon!  The slightly spicy Thai sweet and sour sauce gave the pork jowl a nice kick!

Double-boiled Signature Fish Maw & Chicken Soup: I love double-boiled Chinese soups, where the double boiling process brings out the rich flavors of the ingredients and combines them together to form a harmony.  This fish maw and chicken soup had that same quality--it went down smoothly and warmed the soul.  The soup had a strong aged chicken flavor and a silky texture from the gelatinous fish maw.  This soup's alternate name is Signature Beauty Soup, and it definitely lives up to its name!

Signature Fish Maw Lo Mein: My birthday noodles came with a huge piece of fish maw!  The fish maw was pretty thick and had a nice toothsome texture.  I felt like I was eating bite after bite of collagen goodness!  Hidden underneath the fish maw was a Chinese mushroom which was filled with oyster sauce flavor.  The noodles had just the right texture--a light bouncy bite, and they were complemented by the delightful shrimp roe and oyster sauce-flavored sauce.

Boiled Vegetables with Soy Sauce: After the indulgent noodles, the boiled vegetable dish balanced out the heaviness.  The Chinese lettuce was nice and crunchy, and I didn't mind that it came with the same oyster sauce-based sauce as the noodles because it tied the meal together as a whole!

Lo Hei's Signature Fish Maw Lo Mein gave my usually boring birthday noodles a fancy twist!  With all the fish maw in my meal, maybe the collagen will hold off the signs of aging for just a little longer!
