Booking Cancelled without notice

Make a dinner reservation at 8:30pm for my friend's birthday.   Suddenly found out the booking was cancelled(without any notice) at 11am this morning.   Called and staff said restaurant was overbooked, told me to walk in at 6:30, if we can it there before 8pm, we wouldn't make a reservation in the first place.Not sure if the food was that good, but cancelling my booking for a friend's birthday dinner is not acceptable.
