Seldom I have written a bad review on a restaurant but today I had one of the worst meals in the last few years. Any bad meal is a meal wasted in life so I was a little angry.

When I worked in Causeway Bay, there was a very reliable branch of Sun Chiu Kee and I had lunches there now and again. Their noodles, rice and side dishes were all good or at least reasonable.

This afternoon, my daughter had an appointment in Sheung Wan and we had time for a quick lunch. As I thought SCK is a reliable chain and the place looked clean with sofa seats, we decided to go there.

I heard one customer ask if there were any steam rice dishes left and the waiter said yes. This reminded me that I have not had steam rice for a while. I ordered salted fish with pork slices on steam rice, kai lan in abalone sauce and iced lemon tea. My daughter ordered curry beef flank with rice and iced lemon tea.

The good news is that the iced lemon tea was good. As for the food, I don't really want to describe them. The steam rice had dried pieces of pork with a hard and chewy whole piece of salted fish. It wasn't hot and the pork although dry was pink inside and tasteless. The salted fish was chewy and fishy in taste. Beef flank curry tasted of curry powder and was a little sour. The beef had no taste and even the plain rice was not very white, like low grade rice. The vegetables were crunchy but I don't know what the transparent salty sauce was. It was my fault for going for abalone sauce as what could I expect from a Cha Charn Tang anyway, I must have been dreaming.

Even my very tolerant daughter with low demands said the food was bad. She usually likes nicer restaurants but likes food at Cha Charn Tangs as they are very tasty.

The only consolation could be that the toilet was the cleanest and best condition I have seen for a cha charn tang.

How I wishe we went to Lei Fa Yuen except we didn't have enough time and didn't want to be late for the appointment.
