Kasa, located in Wanchai, has been here for quite some time. There were several photos popping online where the food looked pretty and everything seemed inventive. Boyfriend and I arrived when afternoon tea session started so we were presented with the afternoon tea menu. Set includes a main and drink. Menu is in English and Chinese.
Housemade Hawthorne Syrup with Soda. Boyfriend added $5 for a specialty drink. This was horrible. Though there was some hawthorne floating on top, the entire drink didn't have a hint of hawthorne. It just tasted like plain soda water.
Homemade Satay Beef, Pineapple and Potato Noodles ($48). This is their play on satay beef noodles. It looked pretty. I have no idea why this place keeps stressing everything is homemade. Is it because they feared that after taking a bite and noticing how terrible the food is, we would suspect it was all store bought? Like I said, this looked pretty. But it was not good at all. The beef was lightly coated with a satay sauce that was a bit heavy handed on the peanut. The tube is actually the potato noodles and they were hard as a rock. I expected it to be crispy but instead it was so hard, I couldn't swallow it. It felt like they had fried it ahead of time and then fried it again when someone ordered it.
My set drink was a latte. It was served in a Chinese tea cup. Fun as it was, the coffee tasted like water. It was far too milky which drowned out all traces of coffee. I think I had better coffee at McCafe.
Kasa Style Molten Duck Yolk Custard Lava Cake ($48). Taste of this was ok as it really did taste like the sweet yolky interiors of a custard bun you get at dim sum. The only thing that didn't work was the cake part. It was chewy but at least moist.
This place strived to make it look nice. But unfortunately the food didn't taste as good as it looked. And I think that is what they forgot. The taste. Nothing enticed me to return so I won't be back.
