It's tough to find good fried chicken in HK. Apparently there's only one Popeye's, and it's at the airport. KFC is ubiquitous, but terrible. Luckily, there's a Hot Star about 3 blocks from my apartment.I got the large fried chicken and sweet potato fries, both "spicy". The large chicken is just that: large. I ate maybe half of it. I got the large fried chicken and sweet potato fries, both "spicy". The large chicken is just that: large. I ate maybe half of it. If you're not familiar with the Taiwanese-style fried chicken, it's a piece of chicken (I guess the breast and part of the wing), pounded flat, deep fried, then sprinkled with some sort of flavoring salt and (if you want it) a spicy powder. Also, it's made fresh while you wait. The chicken was juicy but not mouthwatering, the seasoning salt was a little overdone, and the spicy powder was mildly spicy. More spicy than Popeye's spicy chicken, but less spicy than something you'd call "hot". 7/10
Oh, and did I mention it was only $25?
The sweet potato fries are straightforward renditions. It's nice to have something to go with your giant piece of chicken for lunch. 6/10
Hot Star doesn't sell drinks (and I don't just mean alcoholic ones: there are no beverages there), but they did give me a coupon for a drink at the place next door.
They sold a variety of other fried chicken products, and someday I'll go back and try them.
Overall: 7/10
