Dominique Ansel has finally opened in Hong Kong! I've been a fan of his bakery in New York and was so excited to hear he was opening a new spot here in HK. I visited on his third day of opening, and was pleasantly surprised to see that all of his pastries are brand new and locally inspired (beyond a few basics like croissants), and the server told us that they're only in HK and not available anywhere else in the world. I was excited to see the DKA (Dominique's Kouign Amann) here too - it was my favorite thing we tried in NYC!
There was a line for takeaway and another line to stay. My sister and I knew we had to try as many cakes as we could, so we got into the to-stay line, and it moved pretty quickly. We were seated in about 8-10 minutes or so, and our food and drinks were brought to our table soon after.

Here's what we tried:
SWEET
Pineapple Bun - pineapple passionfruit jam, coconut mousse, coconut dacquoise, and the "salted butter" was actually salted mascarpone cream. So cute! This was our favorite of the cakes - the creamy coconut was really nicely balanced with the tart/fruity passionfruit pineapple center.

Chestnut Madeleines - made to order and served warm, with chestnut cream in the middle. Another favorite of ours, they were so fluffy! And the chestnut cream inside wasn't too sweet, so it was nicely balanced.

Xiao Long Bao - vanilla mousse, mango mousse, fresh mango, white chocolate "leaf." The flavors reminded me of mango sticky rice - yum!

Lemon Juicebox - earl grey mascarpone mousse, bergamot curd, feuilletine, almond biscuit, white chocolate. I saw this on lots of Instagram pages so we were excited to try it. The citrus curd were a nice complement to the creamy mousse and almond cake.

DKA - tasted just like the version in NYC. Flaky and crumbly, with a caramelized crust outside. Delicious!

SAVORY
Silk Egg Katsu Sando - this was SO GOOD! The eggs were steamed and fluffy (almost like chawanmushi texture), panko-crusted and fried so it was super light and crispy, and there was a little kick of XO mayo on the fluffiest softest bread.

OVERALL:
Overall, the experience went pretty smoothly and the food was really good.  Service was very friendly, and I liked that the cakes weren't too sweet, and that they had a few savory options too so you could come for lunch or dinner and stay for dessert. Welcome to HK, Dominique Ansel - we'll definitely be back to try the rest of the menu.
