PMQ was having an ENxNICHI event one weekend so boyfriend and I decided to go check it out. It was an extremely hot summer and we were looking for something to drink. Then we happened upon this place: 沖繩海之家冰店 (or English name: Okinawa Churaumi Beach House Shaved Ice). This sounded perfect. The shop is pretty simple as it's one of PMQ's pop up type shops. The shop is pretty simple as it's one of PMQ's pop up type shops. There is seating inside where you basically sit on the tatami just like you would in Japan. The menu is cutely drawn instead of actual photos of the desserts. Everything is in English and Chinese. As it was the middle of a Japanese fair and probably due to it being so hot out, most things were sold out. I guess everyone else had the same idea. Basically, you pay at the counter and wait for them to call you number to get your wonderful bit of shaved ice. As the regular items were all sold out that day, I could only choose the special items. So as a special item,I wanted the cute bear shaved ice. Did it look like the drawing? White Bear ($108). Well...yeah. It did look like the drawing! So kawaii! This is definitely a shaved ice that's great for social media likes. What it included other than shaved ice was fruit (blueberry eyes, raspberry cheeks, orange ears), a scoop of vanilla ice cream, all drizzled with condensed milk. You get a choice of fruit sauce: kiwi, mango, strawberry, berry, coffee. Cute as it was, how did it taste? Ice was fluffy enough without huge chunks of ice so it was shaved very fine. The fruit was fresh and a great change of pace from the usual matcha. The ice cream was ok, very typical vanilla. But the winner? the fruit sauce. I chose strawberry and it was a rich strawberry jam like sauce that wasn't overly sweet. I couldn't get enough of the fruit sauce. A great place for a wonderful dessert for the summer. It was almost like boyfriend and I were back in Japan, wolfing down shaved ice on a hot summer day. Will be back.
