After hiking with my friends, we went to Shau Kei Wan Main Street East to have lunch. As a resident living in Taikoo Shing, I always witnessed a long queue in front of this restaurant but never tried it. My friends haven't tried it before and suggested to have a go. I ordered the signature dish, Hainanese Chicken Rice. As you can see, the portion of chicken is small, still three types of sauces are provided. The sweet dark soy sauce is exceptionally nice, it's not too salty yet you can taste a bit of 'soy flavour'. The small pot at the behind is the chicken soup, the design is very special, though the flavour is just similar to the others.
The texture of chicken is quite good that it is not too dry and chewy 😀. However, normally, different spices and herbs, including galangal, lemongrass, pandan leaves, are used to add the flavour of the chicken. Yet, I can't taste any of them, which is a bit disappointing 😔.
The rice is fair, it is oily, but without the flavour of chicken (the normal practice of cooking a Hainanese chicken rice is to use chicken stock to boil it).
But I must say that the restaurant is cosy and the seats are comfortable. Also, the dish is well decorated, so it's very instagram-able! 📸
Given the price and options you can find on this street, I would hope for a better meal. 😉
