I visited Mr. Taco Truck recently and have been meaning to write a review. I am in HK for work quite frequently, and found this restaurant listed as a top rated, authentic restaurant, and was pleasantly surprised at the authenticity of the food. It seems that in Asia and around the world, it is most common to find Tex-Mex or California "Mexican" which many people are familiar with now and expect the same at every restaurant. Having traveled a fair bit in Mexico, the food I ate at Mr. Taco Truck, the enchilada combo and horchata were amazing and I felt like I was back in Mexico in a little “mom and pop” taqueria. Even in Mexico, enchiladas are prepared differently depending on the location, and most of the time fried, which is something “Tex-Mex” restaurants often don’t do or they simply re-create the enchilada for their own menu. Mr. Taco Truck had fried enchiladas!! The first time I ate at an authentic taqueria in Mexico, I quickly realized that all of the “Mexican food” I had previously tried, was not the real thing. I’m not an expert, but surely the salsa was made that day and had not been frozen and unthawed or poured out of a jar. I think this situation of differences in taste or preparation is true of any cuisine, take Chinese food for example. Wherever one goes, it varies, even though it may be called “Sichuan” or “North East” food. I would highly recommend Mr. Taco Truck to those who are willing to enjoy and expect fresh, authentic Mexican food, not Tex-Mex because I certainly couldn’t tell the difference in taste in comparison to the food I ate in Mexico. Well done Mr. Taco Truck!
