I have wanted to go to Open Kitchen for a while, so we went before seeing a mid-afternoon movie in IFC. The food in the front all looked great. We ordered from the counter, rather than having table service and the staff were pretty quick. We chose an apple danish (based on other reviews), a salad box, a brie and ham panini, a spinach quiche and two cafe lattes. We sat down and began with the quiche. The quiches here are square and the pastry was pretty good. The general flavour and texture

We sat down and began with the quiche. The quiches here are square and the pastry was pretty good. The general flavour and texture of the quiche was good and all in all it was decent. The only issue is that when they took it away to heat it up, they didn't do it for long enough and it was a little tepid.
The panini had a similar problem. The ingredients were good, but an insufficient amount of care was put in when it was toasted in the press. They put it in for less than a minute, resulting in unmelted brie, a cold sandwich and a soft, untoasted crust. Sad, given that it was made with quality ingredients, for it to fall short at the last hurdle.
The salad was OK. The tomato and basil part was fine, as was the green mixed leaf element. The beetroot and pear salad could have been wonderful, if the pear wasn't woefully under-ripe. It was very hard to eat. This was a $50 salad, so it should be of a good standard.
The danish was fine, but not exciting. The apple tasted like the stuff they use at any other place and there was a little too much pastry to filling.
The coffee was on the weaker side, but had an OK flavour.
Basically, everything was just OK, but it should have been great. They are in a high end mall and they charge accordingly. They do not, unfortunately, deliver accordingly.
